Searched the site can't find any replies/topics. So, I'm interested in pulling both flatbed and dry van. Alternating weeks and depending volume. Trying to be flexible, love the challenges of "skateboarding" and the routine of a "box". Taked to number brokers, the spilt is 50/50. So any of forum members does this. And has it been viable for u and your operation? Pls chime in and advise.
Thxs.

I used to run both but the flatbed consistently made more money. Sold the van.

van pays less. I run both. usually only run the van Jan thru April. when flatbed rates are in less than 1.00 a mile, I can get van rates near 1.60. after April we switch and leave it parked. sure its a 300.00 month payment for 9 months that we dont use it. but untill I can get more than 1.50 we dont leave the house. 2500 miles at .50 cents a mile more and in two weeks Ive paid all years payments. 2 more years and we own it...then it cost nothing to sit. I have a new truck and have payments to make, and so I have to keep the tires rolling, but in AZ in February step deck rates are 1.10 a mile and 48k. never. its something to pay the bills but youll probally never get rich pulling a van...I do it just to pays some bills and really only run it part time in those times any way...we run just enough to make the overhead thats it.

Do one or the other and focus intently. Vans are only cheaper than flats if you let them be and can't figure out how to pull in rates. I know of several drivers who like me easily average better than $2.20 a mile pulling a van year round. Stick with one, learn and do it well.. don't try to be all things...

location depends alot rolling, he west coast, things are a little tougher here...the lanes you run have more commercial/industry. Im not saying he cant do it, but just starting out of sac town is alot harder. i think he should go refer if hes really wanting to commit to one unit. rice/onion/melons popular in that area.

You're right. And to that I'll also add if I was pulling a flat in my areas it'd be a cake walk pulling a $2.50 or better all miles in to the truck average... ...cake walk relative to the difficulty of doing that with a van. Easier to get rates with a flat. Doesn't mean everyone does or he will. Generally speaking it is..
