How many hours do you spend each week searching for loads, strategizing, billing, etc -- all the extra duties that separate you from a company driver or dispatched lease operator?

Probably an hour a day normally, but that is for a 7 day week, which is normal. May not drive but 4 or 5 a week, but something to do everyday. Add another 10 hours for tax time.

Years ago......Was much easier, Fuel Taxes were a little different, We had Bingo's..Same with IRP....Power plates ans individual state tags..Too much paperwork these days...

No,i do not hire an outside bookkeeper(taxes,IRP,iFTA etc).......I do everything myself (I dont trust anybody with my income)

Booking Freight takes less than an hour per day when you get good, (Quality customers help)

Im very old fashioned..I do not adapt to new ways of operating..And I do fine

trucking is about 1 thing........making a Great Living and Servicing your customer...

On a slow day I could look for loads until 5pm and come up empty handed. Was I supposed to log that?:biggrin_25511:

You were probably in the bunk doing that, so yeah I guess log it appropriately LOL.

To answer the OP, pretty much any spare time not actually under a load. It's not like I sit up doing paperwork all the time. But if I'm not driving or standing by for a load/unload, I'm doing something related to the business. I have two antique bikes and a '50 Ford Coupe in my garage that haven't been touched in over two years. Today would have been a good day to take one of the bikes out (60º and sunny) but I spent the afternoon replacing the mag switch on my air compressor in the garage instead. Although I did have to walk around the bike, looking at it each time, in order to use the vice on the workbench a couple of times.

Yeah......If you call the Borkers all day long...It can take 8 darn hours to find a market rate.

Set yourself up with some shippers/Buyers in your area......You See the difference/ How much those 3pl's take from the carriers

By the law, YES. I made sure that I logged time for accounting and other stuff. My insurance company loved me. Not something the DOT really cares about but the lawyer will ask about it if you get in an accident.

Initially I spent 8-10 hours a week then another 5 or so hours once a month "cleaning" stuff up. Then I got better at billing a customer when I was delivering and getting everything in to my books while waiting. Belive it or not that actually saved me time.

But when I went to flatbed that all went out the window.
