I am an O/O for 17 yrs now. My son just got his CDL directly, no schooling. no experience. ive heard of guys going out, getting their license, buying a truck, and getting their own authority. My question is, Who do they get insurance with not having any experience? Im an OOIDA member but they wont insure my son under my authority with me training him myself. How is it that a guy can
get their license, buy a truck, and get their own authority and get insurance without having any experience? Has anyone here done this? If so what insurance company did you use? Or does anyone here have any advice?
Thanks

I want to give my son a jump into trucking without having to go to these big carriers for 2yrs before he can get on his own. He wants to drive my truck for me while i retire

I to am an OOIDA member and supporter, but their truck insurance isn't the best priced, and a few years ago it wasn't recognized by all brokers and some shippers as a AAA rated company, and they wouldn't load trucks with OOIDA insurance. For a new driver, you will probably have to go thru a insurance broker that uses underwriters that will insure rookies. It will be high dollar for a year or too, then you can go thru Northland or Great West, which are the top two underwriters with the best rates. I would be happy to put you in touch with the agent I use, whom I feel has been very honest with what I need and not up selling coverage I don't.

Wow auto correct is terrible. High dollar for a year or two is what I meant. From what I've heard, insurance on a new driver with a truck and trailer could run over $10,000 a year. I say your better off swallowing the higher premiums and teach him your way rather than a big company. It'll pay off in the long run. Large carriers can higher new drivers bc they are self insured with a bond, which gives them the freedom to do what they want. Also it costs them probably $1000-$3000 per truck and trailer compared to $5000-$6000 that we O/O have to pay. With my company, I Pay around $10,000-$11000 a year for 2 tractors and 7 trailers and 2 experienced drivers with no claims, clean MVR. Sorry for the book long posts, but if you need anything else feel free to ask or PM me.

Call Mike Cushing at Clemens and Associates. 309-665-4122 or 309-662-2100. I can't remember which one is his direct line and which one is the main office line. Either way if he is unavailable at that moment leave him a message or ask for Joni, his assistant. They really are good people. They are a reputable company. My uncle used to have his truck ins with them back in the 70's-80's so they've been around for a minute.

We are a new O/O with a young driver with less than 1 year experience. We went with RigQuote and they linked us up with Berkshire Hathaway. We were pleased with the agent.

I'm in the same boat except I'm from Canada and would like to replace my dad in 2 years when he retires. I have riden with him continuously since I was 7 and know a fair amount of what it takes in his niche. I wonder if we'll have the same problems with insurance up here...

I went progressive thru a broker that helped us in the past . 3 months driving experience and a new o/o and she was very helpful.
