The brokers would be paid by the hour. Extra incentive compensation would be earned if they kept the O/O member rates up. If the truckers earnings stay high then the employee brokers earnings would be rewarded. Any cheap rates would be forwarded to a load board for nonmembers to take. Profit from the load board would be distributed back to the Co-Op member O/O's. Yes, would work like a Landstar platform. But the owners are the O/O's members. All good paying loads are spread among the members. The not so good loads, nobody wants,go to outside loadboard and Co-Op members take the percentage from those loads. Yes, the brokers have to be paid. But Co-Op members would control the purse strings.
From reading alot of posts. Just seems like good way to compete with the big carriers. Cut out signing on with big carriers, who leave o/o's with just a piece of the pie.

If you have a good broker, they will take the clients they accumulate and move on. They want the same thing you are trying to capture for the o/op.

Your right they could do that. But thats why their pay would be compensated for keeping owner operators at good earning rates. It's something to think about. And would really be interesting to put into business form. But if you read the posts in general. For an O/O, a new idea for increasing revenue seems to be needed. Especially with high fuel prices. And all other expenses. The big carriers that hire O/O's they get the big cut off your loads. Loadboards get a big cut. Look at the big picture. Everybody gets a piece of the pie, but the O/O gets the last piece. To me a Co-Op style business plan has overhead like any business. But at least it works directly for the members. And any profits are distributed to the members. Interesting, something to think about. From reading posts. O/O's are very creative and have alot of business sense. I was just curious to see what kind of response I would get.

Like I said earlier, I think it is extremely unlikely that anyone can come up with a way to put this idea into practice. Good luck if you are able to pull it off. My bet is that anyone talented enough to pull this off will use that talent to build a business of their own, not a co-op for o/ops. Again, I wish you the best.

It definitly is just an idea. Something to think about. I've just never heard of it being done. Thought I would bring it up. See what reaction I would recieve. Thanks

The shipper will want service. All the co-op can do is offer the loads to its members. It can not guarantee the shipper the trucks to move their product. If the shipper next door is paying more all your members will be hauling for them and your broker will have egg on their face. The only way shippers work with truckers that can not provide service is if they are cheapest. This is what you are trying to overcome.

What's the incentive in paying these brokers by the hour? They'd have to get a cut off of the loads otherwise they're just a bunch of unproductive clockwatching, punch in, punch out types with no skin in it. If they are the "kill it and drag it home" types that drummed up more business then the only fair thing would be a fee cut off the top of every load shipped. Like someone already said, would be difficlut to get many o/o to agree on any one thing, like a nightmare imo. And, again, sounds like Landstar, mercer, etc.

Pay by the hour, but their incentive would be at the end of each quarter. If the rates the O/O recieved were within target. They would recieve extra compensation(bonus). If the broker produces, they get rewarded. To me I wouldn't want the broker to take a share off the top then say well I'll take a little more. My friend O/O is used to 2.25/ mile. This load pays more than usual, I'll just give him 2.25 a mile again. He won't notice. The broker if they perform would get a bonus every quarter if they perform well, bust it and make money for the driver. To me I want to know the original price negotiated. Not a broker who tells me what he'll give me after taken an extra 10% off the top because it pays better. If I'm an O/O I want that extra 10%. The Co-Op broker would be working for the good of the drivers and himself(bonus) without the games. Negotiating with a broker would be a thing of the past. All in Theory, something to think about...lolLast edited: Jan 8, 2012

It is an idea,,, but overall there is always,, a way for someone to make the system work for them...............

Funny, can you imagine having some of these A-Clowns that don't believe a broker provides any value as your business partner?
