    How is everyone? I have been reading in this forum for a bit now as a guest and finally got registered not too long ago. I have read a ton of stories about 1 truck O/O's but not any Small Fleets. I am curious if anyone has some good stories about their journey from company driver or 1 truck owner to a small fleet?

    A little about me I grew up with a O/O dad and a 5 truck owner grandfather. Both are out of the business now and just enjoy life. I have an MBA from Arkansas and currently am a Manager at fortune 200 company. I would love to read your experiences, triumphs, etc... have a great day ladies and gentlemen.

    I'm an owner-operator, have been for a while, but, with the economy as it is, I personally don't consider adding trucks.
    Some segments of the industry are more profitable than others. Swift tried car hauling but backed out of it. I did it for a while, but, the brokers were keeping more than they paid the trucks who had all the expenses and risks.
    Some factors;
    Driver quality(Vehicle durability)
    Rougher roads
    Truck Maintenance quality
    Road/fuel tax increasing
    Truck/trailer purchase cost increased(New and Used)
    Government mandated switch to Natural gas coming?

    I think unless you have specific local/regional/national freight you can count on in something specific like blanket wrap/liftgate or stepdeck, etc. it might be open to variability wrt return on investments.
    You might try a truck and driver leased on to a carrier to see how it goes.
    Many customers simply don't know what they're doing and call C. H. Robinson(Zero trucks) or another broker and get late freight or damaged/destroyed freight.
    Bidding on load boards is rapidly overtaking $

    I have always been amazed at the business dynamics involved in trucking.

    so what can the O/O and small fleet owner do to make it better. In our everyday task at work we have 2 circles a circle of influence and circle of control. Are many of those problems such damaged freight load boards etc...inside of the drivers circles or are they outside of the circles?
