I've been in the application process for company drivers for a while now, but I haven't been so lucky. My options left are the crappiest trucking companies I could possibly drive for. Would I have better luck if I just bought my own truck? Will I have more options available to me if I owned my truck? I'm not talking about a lease program, I mean my OWN truck that is under my name.

What companies do you consider bad?I've never been an O/O but I think companies require you to have some exp before hauling for them.Besides without any knowledge whatsoever about trucking why would you wanna take such a huge leap. You say you've been searching companies for awhile now,are you that picky? You as a new CDL holder needs to stop being so picky and get the exp.

what the reason for the lack of response from companies? when you say your own truck, are you talking about a trailer as well and your own authority? finding your own loads, or buying a truck to sign onto a carrier? if wanting to sign onto a carrier, then you might be facing the same problem your facing now, except you have payments on equipment, but as a rookie driver I would advise you to buy a truck just entering the industry, Is the lack of response from companies because of criminal background, bad MVR, Combination of both, Please provide more data, to produce a better response

I should also add, are you just applying for companies that require 2 or more years experience?, could lack of experience be your problem?

Personally, I would get a year or 2 experience under my belt, before I EVER thought of going O/O. There is a lot you need to learn, and learning in someone else's truck is the easiest way.

If i were you at your age,i would RUN LIKE HELL from the trucking industry..I would give up on this ''fantasy'' of the free road. That was only in the movies.Trucking anymore is like being in Prison in so many ways.

Save yourself now and go get an education and enjoy the best times of your life with your LOVED ONES...

Trucking sucks and is a ###### way to make a living...

It's not what you younger guys think...

pattyj and crzyjarmans: Criminal history is part of the problem. It is relatively new. The conviction was in June 2009 for threatening a politician. Before applying for any company, I take a look at their minimum requirements before applying. I usually meet the minimum requirements. But some companies don't make their minimum requirements clear or their requirements have changed and haven't edited it on their websites. My MVR isn't perfect, but it's decent. All of the companies I've applied for hire new drivers. It's funny how I'm being accused of being picky when the accuser has no clue who I've applied for.
If I owned my own truck, I'm more likely to find my own loads.
@ crzyjarmans: "as a rookie driver I would advise you to buy a truck just entering the industry" Did you type that correctly?
@ landstar8891: Your attitude probably isn't helping you.

Are you a CDL school graduate.
What is your location? Put it on your profile; we need to know your hiring area.
As "crzyjarmans" asked, do you have a criminal record; some companies will hire and some won't.

Just read you newest post; some companies will bend their own hiring requirements on a case by case basis. Right now we need to know your city/state.

As for buying your own truck & you having no experience; better look at the OOIDA website.

I don't expect make a million dollars a year. $30,000 after the truck's own expenses is the least I expect. I manage my money like a ###### though.
