Am I getting too greedy ? I think I am.

So this week, i messed up by taking a legal flatbed load from Erie, PA to Denver, Co for $4500 on 1500 miles. There are no loads worth doing in Denver going Eastbound so i am going to deadhead to Kansas City (650 miles empty). Then booked a load from Kansas City to Asheville, NC for $2500 on 850 miles. Both loads are light, no tarp legal flatbed.

This week will end with about 3100 miles with $7,000 gross. I would of considered this to be good money a couple of years ago, but I feel like this is a bad week. This will be my last time going to Denver this year.

Last week, I did $7k on less than 2000 miles (mty and loaded) running east cost and midwest. This week, I gross same money, but ran 1100 miles more all because I didnt want to tarp and did not want to do a load a day. I guess it pays to stay in midwest and east coast.

Sometimes you just need a break from a load per day.

Are there still coil loads out of Pueblo CO? Used to be many loads per week going to tire plant in Rome GA. Didn't pay much and had to tarp but better than deadheading.

I’m currently leased to a carrier and I average around $7k per week revenue. I’m happy with it, but I would like to eventually be on my own because I don’t like having a dispatcher that doesn’t really have any skin in the game. I want more feeedom and control over what I do.

I don’t want anyone to give me all their information, but I would love to learn from some of y’all some tips on making it on my own. I’m not sure if most owner ops work mostly off load boards, or directly with brokers, or find direct freight. Can I make these numbers y’all are taking about just from load boards? My guess is you need to make relationships with good brokers, but I’m also guessing that can be hard to do. I wouldn’t know how to find a good one starting out. Right now I’m just trying to learn as much as I can about every aspect of the business. Any help or tips I get are spreecisted but I don’t expect anyone to give me their budiness

STOP. STOP. This is so unrealistic. He got lucky that 14,000.00 rig didn’t take a crap in the first 2000 miles. Even a blind squirrel finds a but once in a while. I have seen no WHERE that O/O is putting money away for replacement rig. All this talk of $1.25 a mile is insane. My god rates are thru the roof right now. Stop doing cheap freight please. Sweet Jesus. I will telll you this I will dispatch that O/O in any lane he want to run and I get to keep anything over 2.00 a mile even on a dry van

    Be Safe Out There

Leaving a carrier with direct freight (7k a week is outstanding revenue for up to 2.5K miles, unless you don't get to keep much of it) to loadboard freight, especially the first year, when you don't know ins and outs, is most likely going to be quite a regress and frustration for which one should be mentally and financially prepared.

Nothing wrong with Denver, you just got to know going in its a deadhead back to kc every time. And get a rate that pays that extra time and miles.
