    1200mi $2350
    1150mi $2800

That's for four days of driving. Was just off for four days. (There's an additional 70mi to start out deadhead, and 7 miles between loads)

I think the guy that can pull the freight for cheaper is doing it better. Since he obviously has a lower operating cost and can still make a profit pulling freight that cheap he has a much wider freight market available to him. He will be running and making money while the other guys are sitting around waiting for the 3.00 load. Just my observations.

Never thought of it like that. I agree, but it probably lowers the bar for everyone.

I guess it all comes down to what a person perceives as "making money." There are folks on here that admit to hauling cheap freight, lease purchase threads that make my head spin with the lousy money that these folks seem to be happy with. I look at some of this stuff and think, man, by the time they pay the tax man they would be financially farther ahead to be a company driver for a decent company, and have no truck that they are responsible for as far as maintaining it.

There have been numerous threads here where this has been discussed, and even specific numbers thrown around, and the sit and wait crowd always comes out ahead in the end, with less miles ran, which equates to less maintenance, and less fuel used, which means at the end of the year a much higher net income. But to each their own.

I never quite understood how some drivers are sucked into the "lease purchase" programs, anyone with a common sense and some general knowledge knows it is nearly impossible to make any profits when you're pulling cheap loads and have extremely high monthly payments. I personally never met anyone who was successful with any of these lease programs.

Now back to the original question, I'm not a driver…I'm a dispatcher/load planner for a company in the Northeast. Most of the work the company does is power-only, moving trailers for JB Hunt, Swift, etc…Thus far this year my drivers have averaged close to $3/mile ($2.97 to be exact) which isn't all that bad considering drivers are home daily. However, keep in mind tolls up here in NJ/NY are expensive and thus once you take out tolls the per mile average comes down to about $2.30.

Doesn't necessarily mean the guys holding out have the higher cost. Most drivers don't even know or leave things out. Truth is guys pulling higher averages work a lot less to keep their money. Why would anyone make the choice and think it wiser to work 100,000 miles than someone who maybe grossed less at 85,000 but actually netted more? It's illogical. Patience is the name of the game that's how you maximize potential. Big gross revenue means nothing.

I dont even know where to start and actually feel speechless and saddened by this statement. We complain about rates yet think like this?
The guy running cheaper probably has a different quality of life. From family time to equipment maint, and replacement issues. You will run your equpiment and yourself ragged running cheap.

I have a friend that is an o/o and is always running around cheap, he looks alot older than he actually is, owes the mechanic, tire man and has lost a few friends for owing them also , always stressing out. I think he thought the same as you at one point .

Next time youre at a truck stop , look around not hard to see whos hauling cheap. Bald tires , worn equip, Hell the grim look on their face will tell you also.
