Nice to see that proven out with real-world numbers Bill. Your more recent figures are no surprise - you said you were getting better loads as your time in business increases. I'd also suggest that you're getting better at choosing profitable loads. For example, you might take a load at $1.80 knowing in advance that you will get fast load and on-time unload, versus another similar offer of $2 from an unknown where you might waste a day at both docks and not come out as good at the end of the week.

Just thought I would throw this out here. I am o/o leased to ups freight. All my insur. is through them at $72 a wk, which includes gen.lia.comp and coll. and occp instead of workerscomp. My truck pmt is $920 a month. 2005 W. Star 4900EX Det. series 60 515hp. They pay me .90cpm and fsc is another .4668cpm. I do very well. Terminal to terminal dropnhook piece of cake would not lease to anybody else no wait time on loading and unloading and fuel discounts r great. Havent paid more than $3.80 a gallon yet.

As a leased O/O at Crete I've averaged $1.40 p/m for the first quarter of this year. This includes an average FSC of .3581 and an average Misc/Accessories of .892 p/m.

Just numbers you can use for comparison.

A good rate can be & will be different to different drivers. some have to make more money, not due to trucking expenses, but ALL their expenses. when folks worked regular 9-5 jobs, they knew what their pay would be. it was consistent. when starting out in trucking, some will experience great weekly paychecks, & base their spending habits on that.

If I can unload at a co that receives 24/7 that load I will take for less of a rate than one that pays a lil more, but would have to wait til morn to unload. the load also makes a difference. I pull flat. just about 5 months ago I had a load offer that paid $3.85 a mile. I said no thanks. I was 125 miles from home & from all the steel mills. my fellow o/o took the load. then found out is was 45 ft of skidded coils. it took everything he had to secure load & over 3 hours to get loaded & tied & tarped, to drive 45 miles. to wait not sure how long to unload. I got a lil pissed at myself just yesterday. tues. I haul 1 or 2 coils the last few years, with the 1 or 2 exceptions. on semi dedicated run. my dispatch called me mon eve & asked if I wanted one out of steel mill next my regular mill, going to same place. I said yes. I never asked what was going down. just said yes. when I got to co to load I found out it was 8 skidded coils. out comes the chains, binders, tarp, e.t.c. too 3 times longer to load & instead of getting off loaded by overhead crane in a quick manner. I had to wait for a dock to open up & back in. the worst part was the load was right at 40,000 lbs. I usually get 1 coil, 45 48 thou lbs & throw 5 chains on & no tarp about 50% of the time. TIME IS MONEY. For me dead heading is better than a cheap rate. I do not move just to keep moving.

All this talk of cpm and such is missing one big factor....how many miles is that?
$1.45-$1.75 a mile is good, but if its 3000 miles a week then maybe you would be better off taking the shorthaul loads for $3 mile for half the miles. Being in Chicago, I was always able to avg $700 a day and run under 300 miles for the day.

As for real world numbers, I have been on my run for a year, so I've been out of the loop for a bit. I am leased to a company. My gig pays $3,500 plus fsc which is over .60cpm right now. I drive 2700 miles each week, run loaded at 4,500lbs down and empty back, drop n hook and work 4 days. Took me 7yrs to get on this gravy train but I ain't getting off anytime soon LOL!

What a person can get is not as critical as what they keep. I am leased on to a carrier as well. Sure my rates are anywhere from .97 to 1.10 a mile with .48 FSC tacked on. But my monthly insurance cost for physical damage, bobtail, and OCC/ACC is roughly $226. I cover that in less than one run. My fees for using the company's fuel card is between .35 and .75 each time and average discount off of cash pump price is between .10 and .25 a gallon. It sure helps that the company has all the latest pricing and discounts on all the major fuel stops in the nation (in and out of their normal fuel network) online and updated every two hours. I get only hit for $10 a week for the qualcomm. I have my own BC/BS health plan thru an independent agent, so not into the carrier for that. The plates are mine.

My net last year after all expenses, truck payments, health insurance, etc was roughly $60K. Based on first quarter results this year, if it holds I will break $70K net. Not a wild amount by NYC standards, but out here in the corn fields of Iowa, that is darn good money. Especially since I am home every weekend, off on holidays, usually by the house a couple of times a week, and take two weeks off a year.

But I think you might have me beat, SHC! Good Going!!

Yeah, like I said, it took me a while to get this gig, and then it was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. At 7mpg, my fsc pays for all my fuel, so the $3500 is my pay, then they take out $32 for bobtail ins, $165 for oc/ac and $25 for blackberry service. I get between .05-.15 off fuel and there is no charge for using their fuel card. Best part is we are still paper logs :)

Aren't they fairly strict about your logs matching your blackberry though? Not implying anything, you clearly don't have to be in a hurry with that run, just wondering about QC's policy.
