I have had it with trucking companies. I got my cdl at 52, looking to do something I have always enjoyed doing....driving and traveling. I am getting more sitting then driving and traveling. I really enjoy driving a truck and the work that goes with it. I get the job done, get everywhere early, good miles, basicly I enjoy it. But companies keep me sitting in truckstops and terminals over 1/2 of the time. Thats not even counting my 10hr breaks. So after working 2 companies and talking to drivers from almost every other company...thats how it is with every company. So I have decide that if I am going to sit and not get paid it will be at home.
Now here is my question ? Is there any O/Os that hire a part time driver. Maybe that would be on call to run a week while they stay at home and catch up, or to run a hot load for a couple of days, or run as a team for a hot load for a week...etc, you can come up with your own scenerios. Im 52, not doing the trucking thing to get rich. Just to do something I enjoy doing, but I have decide to drive just part time/on call/when needed. I can drive for farmers here in a few months ( and I will ), but you dont see much of the US that way. Anyone interested or got suggestions, give em to me here or PM me. By the way I live in Illinois close to Indiana. Im sure I will get some suggestion on here, this site has always been pretty helpful.
    One other thing....did I mention...I HATE COMPANIES

The short answer is "yes"...but good luck finding one. I have two part time/casual drivers on my payroll. One guy who drives about 20 hours a week doing local/regional P&D work for me, and another who takes a trip out to the coast and back once a month or so when he gets bored at home.

The thing is, both of these guys put in 20 or more years with my company(my father ran the company for 30 years before I bought it from him when he retired.) and retired from us. As far as someone like me hiring a driver strictly for part time....I wouldn't personally.

One thing you might try is the big unionized ltl companies. They hire casual drivers on occasion to fill in for full-time guys when they take time off.

There is lots of companies in this area that hire part time casual people in all different types of work. Lots of times it's nights and weekends stuff and usually local work.
