Insurance...
I've leased onto 2 companies that charged me $150 a week for insurance. But when I got to a more reputable company, with the same amount of trucks, my insurance cost were cut in half.
So I did some research. Come to find out, that trucking companies can't sell insurance. And if they are deducting insurance from your settlements for more than theyare actually paying for the insurance, then they are breaking the law.
Example. $150 a week, comes out to $7,800 a year. An actual cost is about $65 a week. (Which includes bobtail and everything thing else). That equates to $3,380 per year. Which means, if your paying the $150, then your losing $4,420. Or should I say, your being robbed.
Fuel Cards...
Most companies allow their O/O's to use a company fuel card. They even tell you about getting a cash price discount. But what they don't tell you, is they are getting usually a .07 to .10 cents per gallon discount for using that particular card, that they don't pass onto the driver. That's right. Your buying the fuel, and the company your leased to is getting a kick back from the card company. Everytime you buy fuel, your company is making money off of you.
Don't believe me. Just ask to see the paperwork from the card company on your purchases. Tell the company, you want to see the paperwork to check the time stamp. Or make up something on your own.
Here's the numbers based on a 3,000 mile week # 6 miles per gallon.
500 gallons # $3.00 per gallon. That's $1,500 per week.
500 gallons # $2.93 per gallon. That's $1,465 per week.
That's only $35 a week, $1,820 a year.
Of course, if the company your leased to gets a bigger discount, then they're stealing even more from you.
Anyways, there's just a tad of information. I hope it helps someone out.

I'd almost bet it happens more than most would ever imagine and never gets questioned.

And this, my friends, is why we refuse to let our own authority go. Leasing on is just another way to get bent over.
Hrd man, One thing to remember on the insurance thing, the more trucks they have on a policy, the cheaper the rate. So a 10 truck operation will always have a higher monthly rate per truck than say 100 truck operation. -
Also keep in mind that the "non reputable" companies Hrdman was working for were most likely NOT getting a preferred rate on their insurance.

There are only a handful of great insurance companies....
I have had the same insurance broker since I started....When I stopped running dumps and went OTR....They lined me up with Carolina Casualty......
Expect to pay upwards of $10K annually if you run under your own authority and run interstate.....
Insurance premiums are never cheap...However the alternative is far more expensive..... -

They've never screwed me, but it's only because I've kept my head up and my eyes on them. I've been around trucks and trucking my whole life and I've either heard about, seen, or been forewarned about a lot of things so I've always been able to turn around and stop the banjo music before anything gets started.
I watch them like a hawk, though, every step of the way. You can't alway depend on a guy to paddle up with a cross bow to come to your rescue.bullhaulerswife and outerspacehillbilly Thank this. -
