Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois (PPO): Just me as a single earner with two dependents: current premium 830.66 (without subsidies). To stay on the same plan next year they want over $1400 without subsidies. The only way to get it lower is to get HMO and/or through subsides by decreasing your income.Maybe solo 401K? But still, am I going to have all that cash? Indeed, it feels that this Obamacare is nothing else but a nasty scheme. If I was a single, I'd take a risk and would not participate.

The reason costs are increasing is because it is a terribly crafted law. Imagine if it were lemonade:

Every American with an Obaminade plan has the right to lemonade. But you, as the proprietor of a lemonade stand, have the right to sell lemonade for whatever price you want as long as those on government plans get a 20% discount. So you're free to jack up prices more and more and people with Obaminade plans don't care to shop around because they think they're not paying for it.

If we went with a state controlled system and set fixed prices, maybe you'd stay in business, but you'd have no reason to work on developing new or improved lemonade because you could only sell it for the same price.

In a free market system, you'd only sell lemonade if your product was somehow better: closer, fresher, less costly, etc. If you're making "too much" a competitor is sure to catch wind of it and set up a nearby stand, forcing you both to innovate. Sure, maybe some of your neighbors can't always afford lemonade, but your prices are as low and quality is as high as ever.

That is the fundamental problem with socialized medicine -- lots and lots of "first world" countries have their variants, yet once they switch to it those countries' contributions to medical advancement almost completely stop. And yet while they themselves have stopped innovating, they have continued to benefit from advancements made as a result of America's market system (95% of new drugs are made for America). Should America start price-fixing, this all stops.

But we can't gaurantee everybody access to something without also putting limits on its price. So unless you want to curtail medical advancement, the only real solution is to stop promising that everyone will have the same access. Some people won't be able to afford access and of course it is not fair.

But even those who have the least access have better quality health care than the richest man in 1900. So while it may be more "fair" for everyone to forever have 2015-quality care, ultimately society is better served by unfairness allowing some to have better access which eventually does trickle down.

Exactly, HRC and her other RINO pundits will then expedite the process to be like it is in Quebec, where 50% of your paycheck goes to the G to fund all these social programs....All the while lining their own pockets in the process of course....One would think that the sheeple in this country would have had enough of this nonsense, but no, 11/8 will come and go with the same status quo.....

Yeah. Your body at the end of the day is just another piece of equipment. It's all in the maintenance and how it's used.

With the current wealth distribution, the health care is too expensive to afford for regular folks. Despite all the medical advancement, and sophisticated hospitals, people will walk (and I see they do) toothless. And if they get sick bad, they’re pretty much doomed. A few years ago, I think in 2013, there was an article in Time magazine entitled “A bitter Pill” depicting the world of health insurance carriers and hospitals (that in fact do have a non-profit status as they are not publicly traded, yet their profits are staggering) I really hoped, that Obamacare was a solution: everybody chips in and nobody loses their homes after a week long vacation in a hospital somewhere. My wife, who is a breast cancer survivor was able to obtain coverage, and myself instead of sticking to the corporate world, I could start thinking business like and drive my own truck. Well…so Naïve and too good to be true. But of course, they will tell you; this is capitalism and it is their business to charge people what they want. My health, my problem. But if so, then let’s go back to real capitalism. Back to 1789. No income tax, no property tax, little regulations (like running on paper logs ha ha ha ha ha), little central government , army and law enforcement funded mostly by custom fees and tariffs, etc. Maybe then I could pay doctors what they want.

The ACA was/is a joke. Basically just a big giveaway to the insurance companies. I'm lucky now to have an employer that offers coverage under a good group plan that runs me ~$165/mo pre-tax for myself. Thankfully I never have a reason to go to the doctor so I just play along for compliance reasons. But back when I signed up for an individual plan through the NY State of Health website when I lived in Brooklyn the cheapest/crappiest plan was $308/mo which is ridiculous for a young healthy person. If they want and need more younger healthier people to sign up they're going to have to make it more affordable than that.

The more I think of it, the more aggravated I am. I saw the title of the thread so I started to read it. Then when I read about doubling the premiums I could not believe it, until after I have called my own provider to find out that's the case indeed. And I also lean towards believing conspiracy scheme here. as I recall certain subtle steps by the provider. For instance, about last year upon 2016 renewal they quite reduced available PPO Network to the point my wife had to switch her specialist whom she had entrusted for 6 years, however, the premiums went up insignificantly. During the current year they decided that they won't accept any credit card payments from members, I called the to ask about it, they replied it was a business decision. so you have to pay cash only. But now .... WTF? I swear, the more I think about it the more fooled I feel. What's Nancy Pelosi has got say now? Does she still thinks it is affordable? They do want us to join the corporate world. Being Independent? Look at paper logs to be gone, speed limiters to be mounted, self - employment idea to be bashed, and no affordability to have health care plan. Nothing better than joining Swift as a long term committed driver. Piece now! I have go to offload 5 pallets of crackers. My rare long awaited home weekend is spoiled already.
