I was thinking more of warranty at a shop if broke down somewhere, and I think I will retorque just to make me feel better. Was thinking I may use cat rings and headgaskets also.

I was thinking that a 3406b headbolt could be reused if not damaged, but need to read up on it.

Justtrucking2 If you're not 100% sure of what you are saying why even bother on doing it, your comments will only cause confusion, making the whole thread worthless.

I was sure when I wrote the post. I have seen the motors, I have talked to mechanics regarding IPD parts. There is no confusion on my part in regards to using non OEM engine parts and or in frame kits. Plenty of folks out there that have used these parts with disastrous results. Be they in a Fitz or a budget in frame. Again, no confusion here, use these aftermarket parts at your own risk. You get what you pay for.

Paying for a name doesn't mean you get better parts!!! Many a "OEM" parts fail or have design flaws. Not sure if Cat is putting much R&D in an old 4MG motor.

Build quality is just as important as parts quality. Trouble is a lot of people trying to cut cost do it with parts and labor, so the parts get the bad wrap. There are junk aftermarket parts out there for sure, but not all are bad. Do your research and you will find IPD produces a #### good product for Cat replacement parts.

Then you get into the CAT Classic Parts. Everyone I talked to about using them says to run away. Fast.

Reusability for Critical Fasteners in C - Series Engines

    Table 2

Critical Fasteners Reusability for C-series Engines (C7.2 through C32)

    Fastener Type Reusability of Fasteners

Head Bolts Reuse at any rebuild if reuse criteria is met.(1)

Connecting Rod Bolts Standard bolts can be reused at any rebuild if reuse criteria is met.(2) (3)

Main Bolts Reuse at any rebuild if reuse criteria is met.

Flywheel Bolts Reuse at any rebuild if reuse criteria is met.

Dampers Reuse at any rebuild if reuse criteria is met.

    (1) Replace cylinder head bolts if engine has experienced a cylinder head to cylinder block joint failure.

    (2) Fractured split rods utilize torque to yield bolts and therefore those bolts must be replaced anytime the joint is

    disturbed.

    (3) Machined connecting rods utilize standard bolts.

Thanks for the info. didn't have a head to block joint failure so may be good there, and I think the 3406b has machined rods not the fracture type so hopefully good there also. Has original type damper with the rubber joint, I will inspect rubber for splitting and the alignment marks and if good reuse if not will probably have to go the fluidamper route as the rubber type is no longer available. Will probably use the reuse or replace criteria in the manual and try not to spend 20g on a 20g truck. Appreciate the info !

Change the damper. Why risk it separating and tearing up stuff under the hood? Or any of the other bad damage they can do?

This statement is about Cat not you. What good is a 4 year warranty if you don’t admit to your mistake during the rebuild. Liner protrusion issues that should not happen 6 months after the rebuild. Installing cracked heads. Head gasket issues. IF you get lucky and they warranty their mistake the owner is still holding the bag for the down time.

    SAR Thanks this.
