That is true if you are leased to a carrier. But if you are a carrier (as the op is) pulling freight for another carrier does this law still apply? In my mind it does not.

Trying to do a comparison of rates isn't going to be accurate without knowing the freight and areas you pull. Reefer vs. Van obviously there is a difference. Primarily Midwest or Northeast? Huge difference. To make $1.80 to the truck on avg. Gross per mile would need to be $2.25. You are going to see cheap loads occasionally. Anyone who says they don't is fronting. Freight volume can have a sudden drop, could be weather or a new broker lowballing. But if that's the rates you are seeing all the time then your company isn't working very hard for you.

spot on with everyone getting a cheap load on occasion. that's not a bad thing if it relocates you for a good load. recent real world example, I ran to Austin,tx for 2.27, reloaded out of ft worth for 1.69 for Louisville,ky. that's god awful cheap but got me out of a bad area to a really good area and only weighed 15k lbs.

20% just to pull someone else's trailer because you don't have one, is expensive. And I'm sure, since you already have your own authority, that you have your own liability and cargo insurance as well. And plates.

So you're paying them 20% for a trailer and to dispatch and factor your loads.

And you're not even sure if you're getting the actual 20%.
If you plan on staying with them, you need to start having them allow you to book your own loads and have the paperwork faxed to them.

Like I said before, they need you more than you need them. You need to grow a pair and start thinking of yourself as your own business man instead of some poor schlop yes man that just stepped out of a Werner company truck.

And also, it's not going to bring them much more money for booking you a $2/mi load at 20% than a $1.60/mi load at 20%.
For a 1,000 mile run, that's $80 less to them, but for you, that's a $320 difference. You stand to lose a lot more than them when they book a crappy load - so really, it's not a big deal to them if they book you cheap freight.

Get yourself a trailer and get outta there! Be the one who controls your business' destiny and not them.

most companies that pay percentage. will never show you the what they are paid.

you own your truck run your authority. and not knowing the loads is not a smart business. neither is working for someone that picks the loads for you.

best way to start is running under someone's authority. using their trailers till you can afford your own. and picking your own loads. that way you get a feel for brokers that have good credit to do business with., and where the freight and rates are.

mixing YOUR business with someone else's business. not good.

i don't know anyone else's opinion. but i personally dn't think it's a good idea to just up and get your authority and start running your own show. seen way to many people on this forum do exactly just that. and disappear in 3 months. BROKE.

No way they were only getting 1000 dollars for that load.
They are taking obscene advantage of you.
You can't make a living on 1.8 mile freight.
You can get by maybe but that's it.
Anyone that tells you differently does not have your best interest in mind.
My guess is they moved it for 1500-2000 minimum.
What really makes it bad is if you have to deadhead a ways to pick these loads up too.
You have to capture that too.

Give me an example of a load.

This a good way to do it but I would have to see it to believe it.

No way that trucking company is moving that flatbed load 670 miles for a 1000 dollars.
I was born at night but not last night baby.
Your correct in that he did agree on it. That's the whole problem.
My point is to try and wake up some of these zombies that think they are getting good rates when the broker is getting money on both sides of the load.
Nothing makes me more mad than a person taking an obscene amount of money out of a hard working truckers pocket when they have no skin in the game at all.
Many of these companies don't even own a truck.
