I'm still confused on how you log "Off Duty Driving" on a paper log for bobtailing to work or home. I had the fifth line for this on qual-comm, but there is not a line for this on a paper log book. And wouldn't you still have to log the total mileage?

Just stay on the off duty line.
If you looked at the graph on your line "5" it never moved from the top line
its off duty is off duty stay on top line

You can log line 1 when bobtailing home as long as you have been relieved of duty but must log line 3 when bobtailing back to work. According to the DOT you are technically under dispatch when returning to work.

Can you post this regulation? When I leave my house 2 hours early to go drive around in my truck then I am not dispatched for anything. I am not dispatched until I get to work and check in with dispatch.

This is the beauty of living 3 miles from where your trailers are parked I just write my milage down when I leave the house log my 15 min pretrip and roll 3 miles isn't going to raise any eyes. Now 15 or 20 flat a pretrip 15 driving and then 15 hook up and pti gets a little sloppy but it beats the hell out of falsification. Agreed though that's why I didn't drop bringing my truck home from my log book. Should've but figured dot might dig a little deeper if they seen the bill of sale and didn't see my logs for bringing it back. And having no receipt for some guy driving it home for me.

Bobtailing home (also taking an empty trailer...unladen) is considered "Personal Conveyance", on the return to the terminal, if you have knowledge of your next load assignment (dispatch) then you do begin your day log from home, but if no knowledge of your next load assignment, again this would be "Personal Conveyance".....off duty driving.

all u need to do is show off duty for the time u drove. for instance if u were in the sleeper and u wanted to go to walmart.
u go off duty drive to walmart then on ur way back show the time u drove on line 1. u don't hafto show miles.

You just had that stuff on elogs because it knows when the truck is moving and that action has to be justified. When you are on paper logs you don't have to explain personal conveyance or off duty time. Either way an auditor has to be able and look at your logs and get the picture. If you go off duty at the terminal you should go on duty at the terminal. The auditors are looking to see if there are inconsistencies in your logs. If you go off duty in town A and back on duty in town B ????? are going to fly. The same town they won't say a word.

As for miles, that is for miles while on duty. You take the miles driven divided by the hours and they can get mph. You don't record personal conveyance miles because it doesn't coincide with driving time. I wouldn't read between the lines if you make a Walmart run. Keep the math simple with odometer start and odometer end. If you really want to you can deduct the 2-3 miles you moved but that step is not necessary. The DOT doesn't connect the dots with odometer readings. Only with towns and miles recorded due they figure movement.
