I have been driving tandems and tri-axle macks for years off road for strip mines. They all have standard 8 speed transmissions.

I have a chance to drive on road hauling coal in a 18 wheeler. How different is it to drive a tractor?

Is it a tough to go from a simple 8 speed to a more complicated transmission?

The principles are the same. Don't worry about it - you'll be fine. I'd hire you over an OTR driving school grad any day.
