    CDL Restrictions
A restriction placed on your commercial driver's license may keep you from operating certain types of vehicles.

Common federal CDL restriction codes are listed below:

    • E Restriction: Prohibits you from operating vehicles with a manual transmission.
      • Occurs when you take your skills test in a CMV with automatic transmission.

The restriction wasn’t enforced in many areas. We’ve sent plenty of guys to test in autos for years. It’s only been in the last 2-3 years that they’ve started getting the restriction put on their licenses.

Just another law that hasn’t been enforced. Not surprising really

California does not have an auto restriction. As I mentioned in other posts most guys at my work have trained and received their class a with only have driven an auto and I have eyeballed their licenses myself and no such as an auto restriction in ca. Just like a 4 wheeler

I've only ever driven 10s, 13s and 18s. I was unaware of that, thanks for the info.

Well I wasn't able to get behind the wheel of any trucks at the truck stops because all of them did not want to give me a chance to try it out, but I believe I have the jist of it. While none of them let me drive their trucks, they did explain to me the art of upshifting and downshifting. They just said to not panic and just keep calm as it's not that hard. I told an older trucker (looked to be around 70) my situation and he told me that I don't have a chance to learn that quickly and should not even show up on Monday as he personally thinks the entire situation is silly and foolish given that I don't have any shifting experience whatsoever.

But what people aren't understanding is great jobs like this are scarce where I live. This is my only shot so I'm taking it.

I'm definitely nervous, but I've done all I can do. Wish me luck guys.

Good luck. I hope you pull it off. Let us know how tomorrow goes. You got onions the size of softballs, my friend. I’ll give you that.

Kind of dumb applying for rare jobs when you don't have the experience. But hey. Drivers do it all the time.

Companies get tired of weeding through apps when they specifically state what they're looking for.

Good luck driver. But yeah. Shifting don't come in a day. The old man didn't lie to you.

Completely different, but I got hired at a construction outfit many years ago by fibbing. I needed a job real bad, and the guy said "Can you paint"? I said sure i can paint. He meant professionally lol - my painting career lasted about two days, but they put me to work doing other stuff. Turned out to be a pretty decent job for about two years.

    Best of Luck tomorrow!

Best advice I can give you is play dumb and fumble
Around the yard for a while even if you have to go back
Into the office and ask a stupid question until the other
Drivers and anybody else have cleared out.

Your the new guy and everybody will be watching you.
You might not make it out the gate if someone sees that
Truck bucking like crazy and hears those gears grinding.
Any experienced driver can tell immediately if you
Know how to drive a stick.

Most won't care and just go about thier business.
But there's always the one company kiss ### to watch
    Out for.
You got balls I give you that.
Since your doing local your customers are on a first
    Name basis with your office.

They might mention something to your job if they
Think something's not right. You got to be on your
    P's and Q's all day.

Just remember when the truck starts bucking around
Just push the clutch in,take a deep breath and start over.
