Just when did it become illegal to hire someone with out some sort of training other than getting your CDL ???
How does stupid rumors like this get started???
All you need is a CDL to drive you are not even required to go to school to get a CDL .
Now companies are able to require more but it NOT illegal for them to hire you without training yet!!!379exhd, spyder7723, ShortBusKid and 4 others Thank this. -
well ok perhaps i wasn't too clear no it isn't illegal in fact its perfectly fine until something happens it is the carriers responsibility to make sure they hire a qualified individual that has been properly trained. In thew event of an accident especially where there is injury or fatality the company will be looked at hard. If you hire a guy and didn't provide proper training or didn't attend an accredited training school they will ask the question was he even qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle. even the slightest hint that the driver wasn't properly trained and were talking about a pretty easy case for the plaintiff. that is why most legitimate companies require trucking school and require a road test and most local jobs require so much otr experience. and also there is a reason why you must have by law a driver qualification file on every driver and in that file is a road test report showing that they have been road tested. companies don't just have these requirements for no reason and they didn't just make it up off the top of there heads.

Saying that it's in their best interest to make sure they hire a properly trained individual is an entirely different statement than saying it's illegal for a company to hire you without training after you get your CDL.

The op should just get his own authority and not skip the middle man.

The insurance company will say yay or nay, training or whatever. What happens if he gets his own authority with the insurance company then ? If its the only way and you can afford it, go get em. But what happens next if you can't afford the insurance costs down the road ? ( or operating expenses... overhead)

I think he is going to have a real BIG problem getting insurance.

14k for insurance is what most of us would expect to pay without a record, assuming this is the insurance required for your own authority and has reasonably high enough limits.
However please take this constructively: If you can't find the money to pay your personal car insurance as recently as January, do you really think you are ready to run a trucking company all by yourself with no experience? I've been trucking for 5 years and just this year bought my first truck, and I have no intentions of acquiring my authority in the immediate future.
