Again, on a brand new engine there should be "running in" period for 5-10k miles with avoiding of high torq, high speed, etc. Thats not a sport car neither RollsRois with in-house 1000 miles "running in" period. On a brand new ISX 475 back then I made first trip 77000 gross and 70mph though. There were no problems with oil consumption whatsoever.

An update on my ISX 550 powered Pete 579: Truck now has approx. 75,000 miles and oil consumption has essentially stopped. It started slowing down around 20,000 miles but was still using some of the DELO 10w30 semi-synthetic. Switched over to DELO full synthetic 5w40 at about 57,000 miles and it hasn't used any oil at all in the last 17,000 miles or. Fuel mileage has improved too, as the engine has apparently gotten "broken-in." It's consistently running 7+, even on winter fuel as long as the wind cooperates while running 65-70 mph. (This is with light loads, grossing 65,000 lbs or so pulling vans/reefer)

    deming807 Thanks this.

Thanks for info. Got same engine and hope will get similar consumption too. :)

Thanks for the update. I've been in my 14 kw t660 with isx485/1850 for just over 20k miles and was real surprised that I've had to add 2.5 gallons of oil to it. Hopefully it will improve as yours did.

    wdalton:

Has your fuel mileage started improving as well? What are you getting for mileage and what are you pulling? Your oil consumption essentially mimics what mine was at similar miles and my worry was that I might be packing the dpf with oil. Oil use now w/ about 82,000 on the truck appears to be nothing. Still on the full mark w/ about 25,000 since the changeover to the 5-40.

I pull 53' step with loads varying from 84,000lb parachute to running empty carrying one axle so fuel mileage varies quite a bit. I just decided a couple weeks ago to only calculate mileage when fueling at our pumps so truck level is always consistent. I just did three trips loaded from Idaho to California and back empty (1 loaded back) and got 5.8, 6.3, 6.5. But being brand new and winter fuel I don't think that is too bad.

That too sounds like your truck is mimicking mine. I think your mileage will continue to improve. Also, Idaho to CA isn't really a fuel economy run, no matter which way you go. Plenty of pulls.

2014 KW T680 with 2013 ISX. 380,000mls, ever increasing oil consumption. Now at 5 quarts/10,000mls. Light loads, gently driven, no questions, effected by carbon build up. Cummins knows about it but leave everyone in the dark. Valvoline developed a restore oil what is available only at Cummins dealers. It suppose to fix the issue if the consumption is not over 1quart/per 1,100mls. I will try it, but it begs for a class action suit. I have the document about it.
