I couldn't tell you what happened but a different brands of filters will not cause you to use oil.
A general rule of thumb is to use the same type of oil every oil change, I've heard people say that when they change to a different brand of motor oil they may tend to burn more, but that's a very odd thing that you're saying, that your truck burn zero oil before they change the oil on it and now you're burning a significant amount.

What oil is the shop using? Alot of shops get a generic bulk house oil. Some are good, some are not.
