Years ago I had some S60 Detroits drooling oil from the filters. They were tightened hand tight as we used to do. Started putting a band wrench on them that has a 1/2 inch drive hole. Use no other tool just snug the band by hand. Works for us. I could come up with a torque if wanted. Along the way marks on filters and how far to turn them came along. Tried that and went back to the band wrench by hand. A lot still comes down to the person doing the work and following instructions.
Your friend is looking for the service company to pay for the repair and the service company is blaming it on a mechanical failure. Right or wrong?
He should pull out his BS card. I was taught to use a rag and wipe off the filter base. Even if you do not thank it is needed. That checks for an old o-ring stuck to the housing and I have caught many a loose nipple at the same time. They are professions and should check that. It should be on them. Just my opinion.
If the couple from Tn that helped my wife out with straps today in Sc should happen to read this Thank You. They did a neat job tying off the ends. Learned sometime myself.

Had that happen on mine. I snugged nipple with a pipe wrench. Never got around to locktite. Forgot all about it.

I would be afraid that would bugger the threads and make the filter want to stick worse. Always tightened them by hand. The nipple that is but I will change to the loctite program. Sounds better than either of our programs.

You can use a strap type filter wrench from wal mart or a parts store on em. The strap wraps around the threads a couple times giving them plenty of cushion.

Checking the nipple has always been part of my procedure, when I wipe the base off to make sure their is a clean surface for the rubber gasket to seal. Doesn't matter the brand of engine.

If you put a chunk of mud flap in between the wrench and nipple it won’t hurt the threads assuming you’re using a 14” or so wrench while the motor is in the truck and not a 36” wrench with motor on a stand. A strap wrench does work best but I’ve had to use a pipe wrench before.

I think I could build that rather quickly with the top of an old oil filter, an old Chinese 1/2 drive socket and my mig welder.

The more I think about it, I never did more than snug by hand. Last month 1 oil filter came loose and seeped oil, had to crank it tight.Must have forgot to snug them up.Next change, I’ll use Some locktite. Thanks to this thread, I should remember Lol
