I've noticed since it has gotten colder out that the engine oil in my truck only runs around 160-170F loaded and 140-150F empty. Running bobtail it won't get much past 100F. Is this too low of a temp? The coolant temp stays right around 188-190F so I probably can't block much of the radiator or I'll run into heat issues with that.
oil temp too low

Thats pretty much were my cat runs. Never had any trouble with it up here in the great frozen corn patch.
gunner76 Thanks this. -
I put a belly tarp on mine it keeps the oil within 20 degrees or so of the coolant.
Getting below 0 my oil temp gauge wouldn't even regster anytime just stayed bottomed out. At -15 to -30 it would use a LOT of oil w/o the belly tarp. -
both mine are the same bxs in pete and 3406e 550 in star, dont think its an issue

What engine do you have ?
My ACERT has the oil running a good 20 deg hotter than my coolant. I believe oil has it's own thermostat. -
I don't think you can have too low oil temp. if so you would have a sensor shut down ,as you do with too high oil temp.

The engine is made to run with the oil temperature at least at the coolant temperature. not below.
When I worked at a trucking company, we use to put on belly tarps from the front bumper to the mid point of the transmission. Secured to the bumper, and both frame rails. A modern engine uses the oil for coolant and the coolant to cool the oil, Get a tarp. -
You must be as old as I am! -
My oil temp on my 3406B would drop when running with a side wind blowing on the oil temp sensor side. If the oil pressure is not higher than normal you may be getting a false temp reading. If my coolant temp and oil pressure are normal I would not use a belly tarp.
