Well we don't disagree either ......
The ONLY problem I have with exports is the people who wind up on 10 meters with them ......
If some one wants a few hunderd watts on 27.555 have at it ....... I have no right there either and no right to to tell others what to do.
See there ARE HAMS who get it ....... OFF the HAM bands it's not a HAM problem.
If you get your ham ticket look for me on 28.360 SSB or 29.600 FM .....
Ok how bout recieve now?

Channel 6 is the superbowl, you gotta have tens of thousands of watts if you want to talk on there. Channel 11 is the mini bowl.

There is very little difference for one antenna to another. Most drivers buy antennas because they look cool. Get a Francis or a firestick 4 to 6 foot. The deal with antennas is the physically longer antenna will hear and transmit better, Antennas with a coil or load have that load so the radio will see the impedance it wants to see, or basically fool the radio into thinking its using a 1/4 wave antenna. If there is one common factory that cause most problems it's the factory coax. First they have connectors that allow or easily assembly line work, make sure there all connected starting behind the radio. If in doubt replace the coax.
To check your coax use a ohm meter to make sure it is connected, check gerond and center conductor. If this is good check the SWR to, If your using a francis or firestick they normally are about 1.5 to 1 out of the box. 1.5 is fine it can be tuned down lower but you really don't need to.
By the way the SWR meter built into a Cobra is quite good, despite what your going to hear. These truckstop hacks often screw up the adjustment inside the radio, is if its a new Cobra you can trust the SWR meter built in.
As far as tuning, A good tech will set it up to dead key low and swing high, this gives you the audio. Dead key should be about .75 to 1 watt with a swing to about 4 or 5 watts. You will here people claim that there Cobra swings to 75 watts or so, this is crap. There are two type of watt meters nominal (Like my Bird Meter) or a peak meter. Peak will show a more radical swing, but Its not really usable power, where as nominal give you a honest reading. The audio should also be set with a scope, a scope allows you to see the wave form, you can tune for max audio minimum distortion. If a tech tells you he doesn't need a scope do not let him touch your radio.
Be fore the crap starts, I hold a FCC Licensed Class 1 radio telephone license, and a NABER Certificate, Trained by Motorola National Service. I also hold a armature extra class but IMHO, I do not put any credence into what HAM's have to say. Most of them I have meet are TROLL's that could not get there NABER. They tend to share some attitude that they are no where good enough to have, So your a HAM who cares.
If you need more help you can send me a email I will try to help you if I can.outerspacehillbilly Thanks this. -
My monitor is a Motorola R2200, Hameg 500mhz dual trace scope, and the old reliable Bird Watt meter.
But there is room for improvement in tuning of a cb radio. I normally tune them to key at .5 to .75 and swing to 5 watts, and I do use the scope the rune the audio making sure to keep it a sine wave, adjust the audio till it squares out, then back it in to a sine. It will be crystal clear, plenty loud and not splatter on the next channel. would also recommend a good noise cancelling mic.
I would say close to 90 % of the CB techs are hack's. Theres only 1 shop in SoCal I would recommend, and he is also a commercial shop.
A CB radios are not ICOM's. I would agree that a Icom or Yeasu would probably not need to be touched. -
BUT YOU HAVE THE RIGHT STUFF TO TUNE ONE ...........
As you stated 90% use a screwdriver and a 10 dollar meter .....
I have a GRANT LT as my CB radio it does everything I need off the ham bands. I don't downplay CB sets many are very good and CHEAP ...
I work on ICOM UHF radios before I came out to the Jail worked on motorola trunking for the local PD then the sheriff office they have problems too no radio is problem free.
YES I do mods to my OWN HAM RADIOS some CAN be usefull like the 2 meter mod for a TS-2000
Have a great Christmas and maybe santa has a new toy or two for you .....
