Do you like what you do? Well, you can't tell yet, can you? Staying in the truck for months on end eating beanie weenies and out of cans for a year doesn't appeal to anyone. When I was a company schmuck in a company truck, I would run into the other drivers in Gary,Indiana and Laredo and we would hang out, grill food and drink beer on the weekends.

I see a lot of people coming in here thinking that since they are anti social that trucking is the ideal job for them. I see those anti social types out here, they're usually the slowest guys on the road.

If you're flatbedding and are a good hand, you WILL make friends. You will load at the same places that other Prime drivers load, and see guys that you've met before. They will want to run with you since you're probably going to the same destination. They will help you secure and tarp your load just to make sure you're ready to roll out with them. On the other side, all of you help each other untarped, fold them up and put all your securement up. then a guy that's already made a name for himself will tell you of a load, which you mention to your dispatcher, who was looking for a load for their favorite driver, will get the load for you to get you out of his hair, and you can continue to run with the gang.

But, if you're one of those cracker and ramen eating weirdos, who never gets out of his truck, no one is going to help you and you will find that you will make less money than the good hands, and this will affect your attitude even more than that diet of saltines and water.

Manage your money well………….get a room about every two weeks to have a break from the truck. Check in at noon, check out at noon, so you have a solid 24 hrs to relax in the room. Not having to pay rent for an apt is a good thing, that's money in the bank. You might keep a diary of all outgoing moneys for a week or two to see how you're spending it. Then re-evaluate your spending habits.
