There is just wayyyyyyy too much to learn out here to even begin thinking about running your own trucking business.

Learning how to drive the truck properly is just the beginning. Then there is learning how to use the highway system, knowing automatically which lane you should be in 2 miles ahead to merge onto another highway, which lane is going to allow you to turn either left or right and still be in the outside turning lane, knowing ahead of time what another vehicle on the road is about to do before they do it (yes, we can see the future), that all takes experience, and you can't learn that over night.

Then you have to learn about truck stops and how to use those properly, how to get fuel, how to set up a fuel card,

And that's about half of it, and we're not even into the business aspect of trucking yet.

As much as I've learned about the business side of trucking from reading this forum and talking to other drivers, I'm still hesitant to buy a truck and do it on my own even with my 3 years of driving, but I think I'm close.

I am thinking that to make any real good kind of money being an independent, it's going to cost you $150,000-$200,000 in expenses for 1 year of operation, and that's not including the total value of buying a new truck. That's a used truck and trailer, with 600k miles on it. You buy a truck with 600k miles on it, you're looking at $1,000 a month or so. You buy a brand new truck, you're looking at $1,000 a WEEK.

If you have $200,000 to burn and want to see how far you can go, then do it, but it's your call.

And I think anyone who wants to buy a truck and a trailer, knowing next to nothing about trucking, and wants to hire someone to drive it, is out of their mind. I would never drive for someone who has never driven and who knows nothing about the job. Because when a problem crops up, and they WILL happen, I'm not going to sit there and explain to you over the phone why I'm running late when you know nothing about it.

Anyways, I probably should not have replied to this topic, but I really felt like venting about something.

Just go for it. There are a lot of people going to make money off you and they need your help to feed their families. New truck 130,000, new reefer 75,000, freight out of Flordia, dirt cheap.

That's true and you are spot-on thinking that's me in this case. I was hoping to get everything good and bad and especially appreciate answers like …

… who is exactly the type of person I was hoping to find to train me in the beginning like driving team for awhile or something.

Thanks a lot mustanglover, you are not a trainer by chance are you lol

Absolutely no offense to Mustanglover! But did you happen to look at his profile and specifically how many years he's been "Trucker"?? If he's showing the correct amount of time, he's showing "0-1 Years".

Anyway, I really take this thread as cheap entertainment :biggrin_25519:

That would be good you are a inexperienced driver, you won't get any sleep while you partner drives, he won't be able to sleep because of your lack of experience .

Yes your right it says 0-1 years but what it doesnt say is i have owned 2 businesses, and have been in the trucking industry for over 32 years and im 37 .I opened my first restaurant with no experience and was succesfull. My next business i had alot of experience and was not succesfull. All im saying is if you want to do something research reasearch research and them just do it.when i opend my first restauraunt do you know how many much older people came to me and said that was my dream to open a restaurant and i just never had the courage to do it.Many people think because it took them 15 years to become an o/o that means someone else has to do the same.Being a company driver doesnt teach you sheetbabout trucking all it does is give you driving experience. The fundamentals of a succesfull business is having people around you who know what they are doing.I though that was what this forum was for but all i see is a bunch off o/o's telling people you need years at a company thats BS
just trying to cut down on the competition. What are you learning at a company they dont tell you how much they get paid for the freight your hauling they couldnt because they know people would quit and become o/o's.Im very smart when it comes to business and i see BS a mile away if you do your research and watch your cost its not that hard we are not building rocket ships here so stop the BS.So tell me why there are so many multipule year experienced o/o's taking 1.00 per mile freight i guess their companies didnt teach them not to do that huh.......

No not a trainer just a person who sees someone who wants to do something other than being a fool for years and years at a company that doesnt care about them. You dont have to listen to me but thats the fastest way to become an owner op without as much risk.Dont listen to these people the big companies try to get people to own their own truck with not even one month experience so whats the difference.(SOME ARE SUCCESSFULL) They do that with a lease purchase which is a trap. You can get ur own truck use them for 6 months experience and move on.
