Check your mail, people. If you filed online, it seems the IRS doesn't recognize your 2290 as paid and is assessing penalties and late fees.

We filed ours well within the deadline and the money shows that it came out on our bank statement, but apparently the IRS has no idea where the money is.

We sat for 6 hours on the phone on and off with the IRS trying to get this cleared up, to no avail, and only to be "disconnected" twice after waiting our turn.

I've used the same web site for the past three years to file our 2290 and never had an issue, so I feel this is on the IRS's end, not theirs.

We finally had the bank print out the transaction for us, wrote a letter with a request of the penalties and fines to be removed and a statement showing that it is paid, and sent it in with the notice.

Good lord, what else will they come up with to waste our time? :biggrin_25510:

I almost never try to deal with the IRS over the phone. Whenever they want something from me, I get their paperwork in the mail. So I figure that's the most efficient way for them to handle things.

YEP! Happened to several of my friends this year, not me (I pay with a check the old fashioned way, I like a paper trail) but at least 5 others that I know of.

Did you make the actual payment via the web vendor you filed with? Or did you make the tax payment separately using the EFTPS.gov system? If the former, it could be a problem with whatever method the vendor you used transmits payments. If the latter, I guess my letter just hasn't come yet LOL. I used expresstrucktax.com. Paid them directly for the e-file, then went to EFTPS.gov and paid the tax.

For anyone not familiar, EFTPS.gov is the official US Treasury payment site. You do need to not wait for the last minute to set it up. Once you register, they will send your pin via US Mail. Once it's set up you can pay any Federal taxes there, including 2290.

I paid mine by mail, check cleared, but still waiting for my stamped copy back so that I can renew my plates before the 30th of Sept.

I did the electronic like always, and have never had an issue until this year. The guy leasing our trailer got the same letter, used a different web site. It seems to be an issue on the IRS end. When I called the number for the site that I've used for the last three years, she told me that they showed the payment going to the IRS immediately after the file was marked accepted, which this time, was only about 30 minutes. Last year it was about 5 hours or so before I got notice that they accepted it.

    mje Thanks this.

I've had a couple of paper audits the last four years. I found that dealing with them over the phone is useless.

A letter writing campaign is the best option and hiring a lawyer or CPA at $200 an hour isn't always necessary either. I've resolved both audits (with no extra payments due as they were demanding) just by piling on and sending in as must of a paper trail and information as I could.

bullhaulerswife asked "what else will they come up with to waste our time?" Just wait until the Health Care Initiative (ObamaCare) goes into full swing ;-)

You have not seen any audits until you dealt with the IRS back in the 80's when they performed a TCMP audit on a business.

I always pay my 2290 in person at my local IRS office where I can get a stamped copy for my records. I find that it is best to have a good paper trail with them.

    Roadmedic and landstar8891 Thank this.
