Hope that gets straightened out soon. That's just ridiculous. Not surprising though, considering the crap that's been going on already this year there.

I think I'll suffer the wait at the IRS office in the future to avoid this sort of thing.

I have too. Had a full business audit back in 84 at the regional headquarters in Fresno, CA. They said I owed them almost 100k. Walked out with an offer in compromise for 10k.

A local IRS agent I was working with explained to me that a gift "wrapped with a bow" around it is far more acceptable to them than one that is not. I didn't know what he meant, so he explained to me that if I walked in offering real money in an offer and compromise, I would likely succeed.

    He was right...

I Did that without a lawyer or CPA too ;-)

At my local IRS office, there is usually not that much of a wait to pay the 2290. They keep changing things around, but if you have the form filled out properly and your check written out, it usually doesn't take very long. I would not want to take a chance that my receipt got misplaced or they failed to properly credit my payment. If you have an actual receipt that they give you when paying in person, it should eliminate any issues.

I was glad when they quit them. Always made the audits longer and such a pain to deal with. Had to represent client at no charge, but much cost out of pocket.

I suspect this will be an ongoing thing. The 2290 is not the only issue that they have major screw ups on.

They're too busy hamstringing conservative non-profits to do their real jobs properly.

I've got my digital stamped copy so F 'em if they screwed up. They can send my $550 back if that's the case.

I pay in person also. I like to leave with that stamped paper in my hand. This year the IRS lady suggested I pay online in the future. Don't think I will take her advice.

There may come a time when the IRS requires electronic filings. They might start losing a lot of money in the process. With all the taxes we pay, this is one that should go away. I think we pay more than our share.
