You give up that right in many of the carriers packets you sign.

That's because Baltimore is a broker's market. Try the same in a carrier's market and you'll see a difference.

$800 on 400 miles? Out of where? That seems low to me even from bad areas like outbound Mid-Atlantic region.

Gotcha. It still applies to where the market is in your favor versus where it isn't though.

Maybe but certain markets will always be nasty for carriers no matter what so you're much less likely to get what you want. It's in favor of the broker in those areas so you have to accept whatever you can live with or get your rate going in and leave empty. Each market has a lot to do with how leverage the carrier, or the broker has or doesn't have.

To a certain extent. For example, I used to run Florida. I would deadhead to Georgia for a good rate north. But there are people who would haul cheap freight out of Florida, I never did or would. If the freight sits on the dock and no one hauls it the rate will go up. One of the problems are, that people take a cheap load to cover their fuel, which is a bad business practice.

Exactly my point. If someone is sitting in Florida expecting to get their full rates met then they're in for a surprise and a very long wait.
