ASHER, Okla. (AP) - Two Pottawatomie County sheriff's deputies who were killed in a traffic crash while on duty both leave behind families and children.
Sheriff Mike Booth says Tim Lowry of Saint Louis and Mike Roberts of Konawa died Friday evening after colliding with a tractor-trailer.
Booth told Tulsa Television station KOTV that Lowry and Roberts were driving west on Oklahoma Highway 39 to serve an arrest warrant.
When they crested a hill at about 8 p.m. as the sun was setting, they came upon a tractor-trailer that was trying to make a U-turn in the middle of the highway.
Booth told The Oklahoman that Lowry and Roberts were picked to start the department's warrants team because of their experience and reliability.
Each had about 20 years of experience in law enforcement.

Very Sad. Prayers out to the families.
-
I hope the driver gets manslaughter charges! There is absolutely no excuse for that crap!
-
I dont think the driver did anything wrong. It sounds like they were in a hilly area and the truck didnt see anyone coming so he started the u-turn. As the story says, the sun was setting as the came over the hill they probably got blinded by it and didnt see the truck until the last minute. Sounds like a legitiment accident.

There is the issue of where in OK you can actually make a U-turn. Legally, that is VERY few places. But yeah, the issue here is the officers coming UP over a hill into bright sunlight, and not seeing the truck in front of them.
Doesn't matter much to their families, or the driver, who, I am sure is now feeling like so much dog doo under our shoes.Last edited: Oct 3, 2011

unless it's a divided 4 lane then a truck should never do a u-turn for this exact reason. Prayer's go to the Deputy's Family's
-
Another example as to why so many companies are banning U turns.
Such a shame. -
Too fast for the conditions? The Sheriff never said his deputy's were traveling too fast for the conditions, so I guess they were traveling at a safe rate of speed. They had to go serve a warrant at 8 o'clock on a friday night so I'm sure they were in no hurry. The police don't speed. Ever.
Bad things happen to good people and that is just a painful fact.
At any rate, it's probobly not best to throw stones at either side, 2 men died, families in ruin all around. Sad.Joescheppae Q Thanks this. -
I live here its a bad deal, but the cops do run too fast for no reason around here. the hills here are not big just clumped together and it makes it difficult on these rural roads.
mtnMoma Thanks this. -
Some people are really quick to throw people under the bus for no reason, or without knowing the story....
You better be running too hard to be on a jury is all I'm saying.
