Would this work; An auxillary 4 speed behind an overdrive tranny with 4.11 rear gears to get up mountains and fly low on the prarie. What ya think?

been done, it works but 4.11's running, or like you said (fly low) will heat up quicker at top speed. plus takes extra power to turn all the extra gears. so milage will suffer unless that doesnt matter.

I used to ride old russian and US trannies. Twin stick were art to shift. Range control with stick and not so easy to move.

As alternative, KAMAZ introduced 10 sp tranny with splitter. No range, but you can split any gear, shifting like 1L-1H-2L-2H-3L-3H-4L-4H-5L-5H. And many drivers were happy in early 70-s they got tanny with air controlled splitter.

That's the set-up for an Eaton Super-10, right? Had one, not bad, but like 18's better!

I sorta thought there was a REASON for not doing that. I did think about heating problems. Thanks for you info.

Heat won"t be a problem. I have an Oshkosh with 6.26 rears, with a Fuller RTOO9513. Can run 60mph all day long with no problems. ALso thought the input speed could be too high, but it runs well with no problems. 4.11's is a good ratio for what we use everyday, I have a set of RT40-145's behind a RTO 16718. It gives me good speed and good pulling power in the hills, grosing 95000lbs. Fuel economy is good aswell.

    Ricochet1959 Thanks this.

what temps are the rears at when running full out. heat wont be a problem at low speeds like 60 mph. get up over 70 or more all day long and i will bet you will have higher temps than normal with all inner parts spinning so much faster.

Can't have you're bread butterd both sides. I'm talking about 60mph on 6.26 ratios wich is way slower than 4.11's. 4.11's will be able to handle 70+ without any problems. Has anybody physically checked the temps on rears at a higher input speed than normal. If I'm correct a RTOO output speed is 0.58:1. I hear what you are saying Superhauler. But i still think a 6.26 inners will be spining faster at 60mph, than a 4.11"s at 70 mph. I could be wrong.

I was thinking about being able to do the 80mph speed limit in West Texas but also pull 7% grades. An overdrive tranny with .73 top gear hooked to a 4 speed Spicer with a .81 top gear and a 4.11 rear gear looked good on paper. ( So do a lot of other things )
