Hey, I am thinking about buying an old 1984 Peterbilt 359 in the country with a blown motor. Can I adapt a 454 chevy in her? I would really like to get this truck so I can become an O/O, but money is tight for a rebuilt motor. I figure if I can put the 454 I have at my dads and use the Lincoln seats ( yeah it is missing the seats too) it would be a good starter truck.

I forgot to add that I have fabricated go-karts, 3 wheelers, and dirt bikes about 10 yrs ago when I was 11, so I do have some experience in fabrication. Let me know. Thanks

You can put any motor in any thing. Why would you want too? That chevy 454 won't pull the kind of weight required in a truck. How would you get gas with a 53' trailer hooked on? I could go on but, hopefully you get the idea.

Well I figure with the right gearing she can pull quite a bit. Yeah gas milage would suck, but this is just a starter truck till I work my way up. You understand?

I'm figuring a 454 big block trying to pull a 78,000 lb. GVW rig is gonna get approx 5 gallons to the mile. With fuel prices going up yet again, I don't think that would be a good starter truck. Unless your planned end point is the poor house, that is.

I understand what it is you want. Making it work will be impossible. You will spend time and money on that 454 swap and it won't pull the weight. You would be better off to buy the truck and save your money untill you can rebuild the diesel.

Well I don't really have that kinda time or money to have the diesel rebuild that's why I wanna swap motors. That old diesel motor probably only came with 300-350hp so I figure if I have someone swap the cam, intake, heads, and carb on the 454 I would be pushing over 300hp.

I am tired of working in the factory, looking at the same walls everyday. I just need to get on the road and I don't really care if I only make $200 a week driving.

I thought the GM 454 was a big block gas motor?

Something you need to understand....it not all about horsepower.....it's also about torque= pulling power.
A 454 isn't gonna last anytime pulling a load like that.

I hate to crush your dreams of being an O/O...but if you are on that tight of a budget to begin with it, you would be better off staying at your current job, or possibly becoming a company driver until such time as you save up sufficient funds to make a serious go of it as O/O.

Yeah the 454 I have is gas. I was trying to say that the diesel in the peterbilt probably had 300-350 hp, so if I did some mods to my 454 I could see 300+ hp.

    Several points here.

The money you are going to spend on changing the gearing and moding the engine will be better spent on buying a different truck that is ready to go.

Your dreams of being an O/O will be over before they start with this plan. It will not work. One thing about this forum is that there are a lot of folks that either are current O/Os or are former O/Os. We want you to succeed. You won't succeed with this set up!

Sure the original engine was 300 HP or so, it is probably about 1500 lbs of torque. MULTIPLE times what that 454 has.

Seriously dude...... spend money on a different truck that is ready to go.
