OLD TIMERS, what happened to driver pay?

Ok I'm not logan but I don't think that there is any Mileage pay that is really fair to the driver because you give alot of hours away that you are not driving. My hands get paid an hourly wage for every hour that they work and sometimes if the are detained on a location they get paid 24 hours a day until they get to come home usually they are kicked back in their sleeper getting paid. Some of my other hands are on a salary and get paid no matter what. If you look hard enough you can find truck driving jobs that pay better than just cents for every mile you drive although most of these jobs require a little more work than just staring out the windshield.

Very true, you can find work that pays better but back in the day the dollar actually meant something now it does'nt.But I do agree, you can find better paying jobs. For new drivers, highly unlikely. But ppl with exp highly likely if they choose to.I was hoping to get this local job so I can be home every day pay is $16.25 an hr great insurance and they never called.I may go bug them tomorrow so they know I really want the job.To me getting paid like FED EX and UPS along with consistant miles, now thats good money. But most companies that pay under 35 cpm hardly pays any detention and you have to be sitting for hrs before youre eligable for it.There's just alot of hidden things you dont find out till youre driving for a company.

Patty I'm paid by the hour (17.00) + I get a certain amount in my check on a salary basis every check.
I was going to quit where I work so my boss gave me a raise and an extra 125$ per paycheck salary.
I still may leave my current job because were very slow (40 hours a week) and things are kinda iffy but they've always been good to me so its hard to leave...

Well, one thing that happened was Deregulation. Odd as that sounds in today's never-ending stream of gibberish regs; back then the ICC controlled stuff like minimum prices on interstate trucking etc.

Sadly, I remember and I have old Overdrive mags that repeatedly warned that exactly the probs we have today would happen.

You're right. I can remeber when everyone billed by what the tarrif said and not under at least it was a level playing field.

I'm not Logan either, but in my opinion, no experienced full time driver should earn less than $1,000/week gross.

BTW, you think JB and Schneider are bad now? You should have seen them 25 yrs or so ago.

That is so true and also the problem. Pay hasn't changed in years. Not that I was driving back then but what I've heard from many veteran drivers. Its sad to say the least.

While it may be true that trucking was better in many ways before deregulation, I hope no one proposes reregulation. The govt has proven all too often, that they are not too smart these days. Any attempt to restore the old ICC regulations would be a complete disaster.
