Just why is it the 2 check system for union owner operators does not work today? Think about the bargaining power you would have on rates.

Probably wouldn't work well in todays deregulated dog eat dog world and broker mayhem.Don't even know if there are many union OO jobs left.In it's time it was great,IMHO.You were basically a company driver, that owned a truck and trailer and leased it back to the company, with benefits, and either supplied a driver or drove it yourself.I was with PIE-Allstates in the 70's and Consolidated Freightways special commodities, and TIME-DC,back in the day,all with my own rig,all two check teamster system. You ended up with 75% of the total line haul that the customer was actually charged, not some triple brokered rate.At the end of the day,it was the best bottom line money I ever made.Glad I bought my house, farm and other stuff back in those days, because it seems trucking is just survival anymore.Again JMHO.

I started with Time-DC as a driver for a small fleet operator ( Time's employee). Bought my 1st truck and went to work for Globe. Stayed there about a year and moved on to Branch Motor Express. When we filed for detention time at Branch. When we got our settlement ck. we got our detention time. None of that you get paid when we get paid. We got paid! When I started at Time we got paid motels when we were on the board away from our home terminal. All of us were domiciled out of Gary,In. Teamsters Local 142.

Between Pops 78 W900A, 77 Freightliner conventional, the International is best for me as well. The W900 use to kill my right knee running to Mass and back but it was a nice ride for the time I guess. I'm 6'-2" 250lbs so I appreciate the leg room.

Admiral, you know we all complained about things back then, too, but did you ever think trucking would evolve into the mess it is today, lol?I was only with TIME for a short while, after CF pulled the plug on us and closed out the Special Commodities division. Was just trying to get some more teamster time in.I was at TIME about a year, then they pulled the plug for good, too. Thanks DEREGULATION!!!
I was with Teamsters Local 199 out of Los Angeles.

Wasn't it all big money, everyone had a CB, no cell phones, no quallcom, 2 log books, no speed limiters, rolling black coal all day and night? What could you possibly have to complain about?

    RubyEagle Thanks this.
