First Thank You for you service.
Have you thought about going to school in Montgomery at Truck Driver Training | Trenholm State Community College
I think ,but don't hold me to it that your vet benefits will pay for it and they have job placement as well. Just an idea. I live north of you.

    Thank Travis

I believe I'm going to go ahead and do that anyway, just so I don't jump the gub prematurely and don't run into any surprises when I get there. I dont anticipate any. I'm the same weight I was when I got out of high school ~ retried out of the Corps 22 years ago.

I can tell you a truck co. wants potential drivers hiring on to be "in line" meaning, no confusing situations to deal with. You stating you want to move to another state while in the hiring process might confuse the recruiter ! Anyway, I always ask this question......Why are you considering trucking ? I ask because we see so many guys wanting to change carrers and they think trucking is the way to go. Really think this thru.....OK ? You do a lot to get into this industry, an industry you may be out of in 3 months ! Just understand this, OK ? Good luck

    Thanks Travis,

I believe I'm going to go ahead and go that route. Millis Transfer requires it before attending their "school" as well as your CDL Learner's Permit.

Additionally it would catch any hence unforeseen issues. Even though I don't anticipate any? Same weight I was out of high school and when I retired out of the Corps.

No issues with sleep apthia, blood pressure , diabeties.

My co pay would only be $12 out of pocket? Better to know, than to quit my job, and then go a the way to CDL school ,..............and?

Well that's fine.No need to quit your job.You won't have or be offered the job if you can't pass their DOT physical so your doing more work than is necessary. So for those that don't want to do two physicals just know you don't have to make it more complicated than it already is

From what I've seen on these boards you want to lean towards tankers or some private fleet if possible. Given your background and attitude you shouldn't struggle too hard at getting decent offers.

Out of curiosity why are you going to a trucking school paid for by a company? Why not pay for school out of pocket and be free on graduation? Chinatown can correct me if I'm wrong, but there might be large financial benefits to going that route the first year. If it means an extra 20k that first year that's what credit cards were invented for in my opinion.

    Thanks A.M

Food for thought for sure and certain

No. #1 Isn't the upside potential in regards to the money

No. #1 is I'm accustomed to the Spartan ~ Alone lifestyle . It suits me and who I am as an individual.

No. #2 It offers a certain degree of autonomy and indendence, with more say in how and when I go about accomplish my assignments

No. 3. Less contact and interaction with others in the day to day such I currently have in my current job

No. 4. Not being geographically tied to a particular job in a particular location

No.# 5 The upside potential to live virtually anywhere you desire and stil have decent paying job

No #6 A potentially greater degree of job ~ employment security

No. #7 Performance based income vs blanket based income. (Where the high achiever is paid the same as the greatest slacker

No. #8. Self Actualization for when you KNOW you did a good job and the self satisfaction for having done so

No. #9 The day to day challenge

No. #10. The Never Ending learning

No. #11 The many and varied jobs and potential jobs (OTR, Regional, LTL, Dedicated, local etc)

Take a look at McElroy Truck Lines they are based out of Cuba Al.They are a flatbed company. They get you home every weekend.65% of all their tarp loads are all ready tarped for you.Not every load will need tarped. They are a preferred carrier for Lowe's.So Lowe's will let you park on there lots for the night.Which will take some stress out of having to find a parking place every night. Also being able to spend the night where you will unload is a nice advantage. They are a good starter company that will keep you safe and out of trouble.Their pay is about the same as all starter companies.Got to start some where.
