No offense meant nor intended. Not one to throw a blanket over any particular demographic group.

But I've dealt with a lot of people who have little or no work ethic from across the entire spectrum of all groups.

Was forced to give a verbal warning to a 27 year old forklift operator who saw nothing wrong disappearing and hiding in the bathroom for 45 minutes at the beginning of the shift. Operatiors on their cell phones texting while on the clock, coming back from break and lunch late.

On , and on and on

    Verses

    Coming to work to work

Getting your mind on your job and your job on your mind. Getting your money in your money on your mind.

    My bad!

(Hate that term as though that made everything alright)

Well Gunny first off THANK YOU FOR 20 YEARS IN THE CORP, I see they where kind enough to issue you a spouse. (I didn't serve in the military but I spent 22 years serving my local community as a firefighter/Paramedic) as a former Millis Transfer employee I CANNOT Stress enough how great a company they are (I have other posts as to why I'm no longer there) ONLY Down side is they are switching over to Auto shifter, they drive NEW Kenworth T-680, the oldest truck on the road is only 2 years old, they turn them in around 500k back to Kenworth so they can be sold with a little bit of warranty. All their trucks are auto greaser which means you NEVER have to worry about greasing ANYTHING on the truck which is pretty cool. Training is 3 weeks class room then you spend about 4 weeks with a trainer (15,000 miles) you will train at Trenton Ohio school with Bill as the instructor, great company great pay, they get you home when they say the will. Only real DOWN Side is they have a NO PET Rider program (didn't see that as a requirement for you, but some people wanna take their pets.) The other company I highly recommend BEFORE THE OTHERS on your list is Jim Palmer Trucking, they are located in Missoula Montana but have a training school in Springfield Missouri. They pull Prime trailers BUT ARE NOT OWNED BY PRIME, they are owned by WIL-Transport in Sprinfield, they hire out of the Continental 48 and run all 48. I will be starting with them this spring. ( I have a back injury from fire service I am working through first before I can get on the road again. Let me know if I can help with anything else

I just flipped over to Millis Transfer web page and they guarantee $50,000 a year if you run the company average 115,000 a year. That would make me depressed.By May I've usually already made that.If that's what the average Van driver is making no wonder they can't find drivers and think there's a shortage.I'm sorry I just think that drivers sacrifice to much and the reward is to small.I no that $50,000 in small town no where is a lot of money. But I was making $30,000 a year in 1991 and I was a kid with no experience. And back then I wasn't satisfied with that.By 1995 I was at $70,000 and was feeling proud and wondering what more I could do to make ever more.By 2005 I hit my first $100,000 year as a company driver.I have been blessed and the sacrifices of a trucking lifestyle is hard. There are a lot of different nitches or categories in the industry and I guess some are worth more than others.Maybe $50,000 is what a Van hauler is worth just seems sad

    Thanks, FireMedic

I knew about Millis switching 100% to automatics, and they now have driver/inward cab facing video cabs, which really isn't a deal breaker for me.

The company says it's only recording when try the red recording light is on, some drivers say it records 24/7.

It may not be George Orwell's 1984? But it is 2017. Video cameras are everywhere.

I get with one outfit I tend to stay with them? (20 years in the Corps). I've been with the company I'm currently with for 7 years. started out as a temp for $8, move up to full time, then QC, then first line hourly supervisor ~ management. Not interested in salary management as I would actually take a pay cut.

But that well is running dry. My kids via the XHEX are gone and grown and on their on. Don't have much time for me
There's sadly some parential alienation and ensteangement involved. I deployed overseas more during my last four years than all the other sixteen put together.

I've been looking into and thinking about trucking for years. But just ignorant as to how to get into in. I was single and solo all by my lonesome from 98' until going on about six years ago. Man! I wished I would have gotten into trucking back then

Lord knows I've slept in worse places than in the back of a truck. And I'll eat just about anything in so long as its edible. Doesn't take much to make to make me a happy camper. I've gone days without a shower, just taking spit baths out of my h helmet out in the field.

I was raised an only child back up in the pine thickets off a few dirt road I'm Alabama by Grandparents who raised seven children through the Great Depression and WWII. My GF was born in 1899, and my GM in 1906. They taught me on about getting by and making do.

I'm so far as having the modern day comforts I'm more accustomed to NOT having them than having them.

All my Life I've worked more 12 & 14 hour days than your 9 to 5. My being a "Workaholic* was one of the reasons the XHEX listed as divorcing me.

I'm very adaptable for the most part. So mentally and emotionally I believe I'm cut out for the trucking lifestyle. Doesn't bother me one bit to be alone. I been all over the world and a good part of the USA. Lived in Japan x 4 years .

$70 ~ $100k would be nice. Don't know what the wife and I would do with that kind of money. Pay off some bills, buy a few things we need. The wife would undoubtedly spend some on the grandkids? But their parents make good money already. Her son is a 31 year old river tow boat captain.

I'm more accustomed to working 80 ~ 90 hours a week. I work 40 hours I get an itch that needs scathing.

Were it just me, myself and I? I'd sell off some things, put the rest I'm storage, and go out three ~ six months at a time. But I'm married, and have obligations and responsibilities to the wife.

Millie appeals to me on a lot of different reasons. #1 They're stable having been around since the 1930's. They seem to have a good balance of home time vs being out on the road. They have 24" flat screen TV's in all of their trucks with Direct tv and Siris satellite subscriptions paid by the company.
Although I'm not much for watching tv.

If you don't utilize their health insurance (which I don't need, I've got mine via the military TriCare system. Monthly premium is around $720 a year for both the wife and I, with a $12 copay for doctors visits and a $6 copay for prescriptions) they pay you 1 cpm more)

I've already have a retirement check coming in from the Marines. Wife has a check coming in for about $10k.

Aside from family being over here in Mississippi? Mississippi is one of the , if not the cheapest places in the nation.

About 17 miles north of where we'll be moving to, is a regional medical and retail hub. Baton Rough and Jackson Mississippi us +/- an hour away. We would be about 15 minutes drive from I 55.

Now that I've been over here? It seems like a good place to settle in and down?

I'm not 100% committed to any one trucking company. I don't however want to get with some company that isn't ran half ###! Thats ran by a bunch of clowns.

OKAY Let me clear up some misnommers about the inward facing camera. We used them on both the Fire Dept and the Ambulance services I worked for, I spoke with the DESIGNER of them (not just the rep) THEY CAN NOT be Activated by the office, THEY ONLY record and send information when certain parameters are met, based on G forces, set by the company. THE ONLY Reason they have inward facing camera's is to see what the driver was doing, was he sleeping at the wheel, was he texting ( in one instance at Millis the Driver actually was STANDING UP, he hit the cruise control and stood up to get something out of the upper cubbie and WHAM), he claims he wasn't able to react in time, they went to the in cab camera, and there he is plain as day STANDING AT THE WHEEL) So these people who claim they record their conversations have NO CLUE what they are talking about. Cameras ONLY Save the incident that activated it, 10 Sec Before and 10 Sec AFTER. Now if it makes you feel better, when you are parked for the night, hang a hat over the camera, but something tells me unless you got some that special sauce they where handing out in Vietnam ( I had a dear friend exposed to it) YOU AREN'T paranoid, so just get in the truck and do your job, 99% that camera goes off it get's sent to Safety and they see it and delete it, use to smack the bottom RECORD button when my trainer was singing POORLY, just for them to get a laugh, they would message us on QC telling my trainer to learn how to sing.
