I'm not a young man and am close to retirement but looking for another (my last) job.
At my age (64) I don't think any company is going to want to pay for my schooling. But I think if they do they want to "own" you for 2 to 3 years and you don't make much.
The questions I have is if I pay for my training will a company take me as a "trainee" for six months to a year and then compensate me as a driver with a year of experience?
Thanks in advance from a complete idiot about these things.
FWIW: Passing a DOT Physical should be no issue. My health is fine. I walk 15 miles a week and bike another 50.

I'm near 70 and had no problem getting a company to pay for school. Just finished my 4th week with a trainer. 2 weeks to go to paper test and road test again and get a tractor. You're not too old. There are a lot of folks out here around our age and older.

Just a little slow in getting things done don't you know. //TEASE.
I am mid 50's myself and who knows whats possible after the doctors get through with the spare parts.
What I have run into a time or two already is a generational problem when a 24 year old dispatcher on the phone with a voice that has not yet broken all the way squeaks out a load assignment. UGH.... -
You're golden.
Where is your location?
Don't believe all the BS on here about being a slave if you attend a trucking company school.
You'll have more choices if you attend a private school such as a community college or tech school cdl program. -
I'm in Richmond, VA...
Thanks for the replies guys.

Richmond is rich in good paying trucking jobs for new cdl drivers.

What they want is people that aren't lazy.
If you aren't THAT... you'll write your own Golden Ticket quickly.

Ah yes the famous game of inches. Used to be a game of inch or less but I don't see that well anymore working on a cataract that will need a new lenses at some point.

I know this will sound a bit silly, but here goes! You should have no issues getting a job and getting company financed training. I would caution you to check out the Virginia Workforce opportunities to get technical school training. I would also add that at 64 your body should be OK, but sitting for hours can cause problems with your legs, and lack of activity can add some pounds. You should not have any problems. I just council caution with your health choices, the food the average driver eats is horrible!
