I think I ran 75-80k each of the last couple years. Some of it was because of the damage the towing company did to my truck and some because I was pretty sick. This year should be better since I have a new truck and healthy again.
I do spot market only, but I understand a few things in my area that I can get before they hit the boards. I have a couple brokers I use but one main one since I started out. He started at the same time so we have grown together and he trust me as I do him. In fact if I had thought about it in time before this weekend I would had asked him if he wanted to go to the. Min. vs KC game since I will be delivering next to him Sunday. I might give him a call on his cell and see if he wants to go. Need to check the weather out first before I ask since I do not have any good warm clothes in the truck.

Technology has made it much easier to operate with your own Authority. It seems the trend has been bigger Brokerages and more one Truck Operators. Used to be a few, like CH. Now there’s a bunch of Mega Brokerages. The Mega Carriers always had their own Brokerages, but now they are a much bigger part of their operation. What started in the early 80’s coined JIT shipping made famous by Lee Iacocca when he successfully copied Toyota’s Business model, has become the norm for almost all Industries. Lower overhead through lower inventory. It’s all about efficiency. 3rd party Logistics and warehousing has exploded. Especially since NAFTA. Trucking Companies that expanded into warehousing have done very well. Trucking as a whole has benefited. It’s gotten huge. Everyone wants a piece of the pie. There’s more O/Os with their own Authority than ever before. It wasn’t always so easy. Before Get Loaded.com You had DAT which was very expensive. Collecting money was streamlined by factoring companies, slowly more and more OO’s figured out they could Operate on their own, instead of being Leased. Being able to find freight and collecting money owed was always the biggest concern. Used to be “ Find a few good Brokers “ or “Find a good customer”. That’s fine till they go out of Business and owe you thousands of dollars. I’ve always tried to be able to book with as many different Brokers as possible. Freights always there. The Companies that handle it always changes. To have a rigid plan relying on one customer is unrealistic, especially in Trucking. Everything is constantly changing and evolving. Being flexible is much more important. The only thing that makes me laugh more than a Mission statement is a Business plan. Both are a bunch of BS. The time is at hand. Once it’s gone so is the opportunity. I’m sitting this weekend. Why? Because I’m stubborn. I passed up at least 7 possible loads. Thought I could get a better price. Wrong. Everything flew off the boards real quick. All were under $190 pm. I came down here to SC 800 miles for $2000. Bottom line, I’m out at least $1000. Guess I sure showed the Industry that I’m not hauling cheap. Lol. Point being, one Truck doesn’t make a difference in such a huge market. No one Truck is responsible for low rates. I’m just not that important. Neither is anyone else.

I'm a newbie in this forum so can't start a new thread. Trying to find out what the best load boards are. Have a friend looking to ship a full van of Christmas trees from Portland to Baltimore and wants to get ahead of the game. Pays cash. Any help?
