J.C.Heizer built and opened LeeHi in 1959. He sold it to his general manager, Leonard Pennington in 1968 and he sold it to Bobby Berkstresser in 1981 who still owns it today. In 2011 he became a TA franchise to allow him to expand to what is has become and he is still expanding.
I had the pleasure of meeting and talking with him this past summer and he is a real gentleman who is concerned with his employees and the trucking industry overall. The association with TA has allowed him to become one of the largest truck stops on the East coast.
I too prefer the smaller, Mom & Pop type truck stops but in defense of Mr. Berkstresser, he has done what most others will not, that is give us drivers a place to park, rest, eat, fuel and be safe. Most stops do not care except for the profits. -
So anybody headed there in October for the southern Classic?
