Hello all,
I am new to the forum and I am hoping to get some decent advice if possible. Thanks to all in advance who get back to me. I am 40 yrs old and up until 2 years ago was happy to call myself a professional truck driver. I drove for 13 years, 2 OTR and the last 11 doin regional/local LTL mainly in NYC and Philly. I worked for Excel, Pitt Ohio, APA and Cowen and gotta say enjoyed my time with all of them for the most part. Have all the safety awards, extra training, and bells and whistles (not trying to boast, just painting my picture so to speak). I decided to walk away a few years ago when a friend of mine offered me a sales job I couldn't refuse (money wise) and I thought it would be a better fit. But I soon found out I am in no way an office kinda guy, especially after being outdoors for so long, lol. The money is great, the hours are way shorter but still, can't say I am anywhere near as happy as I was driving. As the old saying goes "if you love what you do you'll never work a day in your life", that was me. I took pride in being good at what I did, loved meeting new people all the time, etc etc.
So, here's my deal. I am recently divorced, I have no mortgage payment, no car payment, no insurance payment, basically nothing but cell phone bill. My kids are grown, and I find myself in a very unique situation, at least I think so. The stress for me before (driving) was that I couldn't make enough money to get ahead, and I had a wife and kids to take care of. Trying to make money and be home to spend time with your family in trucking is a very difficult thing to do as most of you know. Now, I find myself being able to go back over the road, no rush to get home, and pretty much ok making whatever. Granted, I want to do the best I can financially, but what I'm saying is I don't have to kill myself you know?
So, I've decided to get back behind the wheel and get out over the road. One ting that used to drive me nuts is that I would pass all these really cool places but never had time to stop and "sight see". So, and maybe I'm crazy, now I want to try and see if I can balance work and pleasure. Work for a week or two then tell them, for example, when I get to, say, orlando, I want to take 2 days off, rent a hotel and car and go do Disney or whatever.
From a company's standpoint, I think the 2 main benifits of hiring me are:
1) I won't be ######## about home time
2) I have a great work history, no accidents, low risk insurance wise
From my standpoint, I won't have to deal with a company "holding my job over my head" cause financially, I don't really need the job, lol.
(I hope I am making sense of all this)
So, the advice I'm looking for from you guys and gals is, if you were in my position, what company would you recommend me looking into? I would like decent benny's, and a fair wage for a fair days work. A company that treats the drivers with common courtesy and repspect ( A strech I know lol). And a company that has decent trucks considering I'll be living in it. But the most important thing is, and I'm hoping to hear from people that work for the companies they recommend on this one, what company would work with me best with the senarios I've laid out here (work and sightseeing lol)?
Ok, I wrote a novel and I hope to get some good advice. Again, thanks in advance.

Since you seem to be in good shape financially, it sounds to me like you need to buy your own truck. Then lease it to one of the outfits like Mercer that will let you run when you want to run and lay around when you want to do that. I'm not sure you'll find a company that can afford for you to take off sightseeing while their truck sits around waiting on you.
-
Swift would probably not fit your wants and needs. They expect their trucks to keep moving and if there is down time, it's usually somewhere you don't particularly want to be. That said, since you've been off the road, if you decide to go to one of the big kids on the block, you will probably be expected to take a refresher.
Dogknot is right. It may be a better idea to lease onto a company with your own truck. If you do that, though, make sure you have a sizeable reserve on hand for maintenance. Check with BlackW900 about that. He's an excellent resource. -
OK, first off, there are no "bennies" in this biz. The best you'll get is health insurance, for a fee. You may get "holiday pay" which is minimal. No company will allow you to take days off just because you want to be a tourist for a day or two. You have to be at the ready for dispatch. So, either become an O/O, or figure on being a tourist when the opportunity is there. ( as in 34 hr. reset).
Yup Thanks this. -
Ok, first thanks for the replies.
Dogknot, I'm not financially set, I just was able to eliminate almost all my bills and I'm looking to get back out there before I get stuck in the monthly bill rut again and can't go lol. I wish though right? That being said, my credit sucks, I think getting a truck would be a difficult thing for me but thanks for the advice.
Injun, I wondered about Swift but to be honest, I just never really heard many good things with them over the years. I'm assuming your with them? How long now and what are your thoughts on them as a company? And I expect the refresher, that's no biggie, I've been keeping myself driving here and there on the side and to be honest, it's like riding a bike, no? lol.
Allow Me., when I said bennies thats all I was referring to is medical and I didn't expect them for free. I'm also not expecting a company to let me be a tourist, maybe I put it out there the wrong way. Basically, instead of running a few weeks and then going home for however much time I get, I want to run a few weeks then take my "home time" somewhere I can enjoy myself.
I hope I don't come off being naieve or whatever, I'm not. I know and have been through a lot of what sucks with this job. But I try to make the best of what I get and go with it. I try to avoid the negativity, but I am by know means a pushover or have a blind eye to any of the bs that goes on. I'm just trying to get some opinions from people.
There HAS to be drivers out there that actually like what they do, no? -
Even as an O/O your pipe dream of sight seeing wont wash.

I do like what I do. But, I'm not under the same microscope as the company guys. I started with Swift, stayed a year, left for nearly two and a half years and have been back for nearly a year. Check the "Company DAC Reports" threads to see what current employees of various companies are saying. There are a few who will claim their company never does anything wrong and there are some who will say they never do anything right. "Cheerleaders and Hecklers." There are also those who will give an honest assessment of their employer.
The thing to keep in mind is every company has its own brand of BS. You just have to do your homework and figure out which flavor suits you best. It's not always easy. But, these forums are a good place to start.
You will be basically starting over since you've been off the road as long as you have. But, since you have road experience already, you will have a better idea what to expect. Unfortunately, most of the big boys will not recognize that. You will be starting out at low pay.
Another option is to knock on doors in your immediate area. Look for mom n pops or independents who need a driver. Just be careful you don't get hung out to dry by some fly-by-night. They're out there, too.
Apply to as many as you have time for then pick and choose from there. Prehires don't mean anything. All that is, is an invitation to move forward in the application process. But, get as many as you can. It will give you an idea who is nibbling at the bait you're throwing out.
Good luck to you. -
