So what does a mechanic do from a dealer when you drop your truck off for work, and he tests drives it? Do you really think he cares about your elog? I always log out. When the system asks me to accept or reject said drive time, I reject it. Whatever the safety guy does with that drive time is on him or the company.
FYI, in Canada, Ontario specifically, a licensed truck and coach mechanic doesn’t need a CDL to drive a class 8 truck. His/her trade ticket is all that’s needed to test drive.

I use the on duty yard move a lot now....it is helpful in getting a 30min break in when I need it as well. It takes 30mins to drop and hook at some of these bigger places, like Home Depot and their mile long warehouses.

I can tell you from exp. that you will trigger a violation, but it's based on how your system is setup and also the mood of an inspector. BTDT have the t-shirt, mug and level 1. There are a lot of days where I'm hitting the yard at the end of my 14, and still have to drop the trailer, fuel, park and do my paperwork. Back in Sept., my day started at 3:55 am I went OD, drove 5 hours to Grand Junction, where my customer decided to turn a 1 hr unload into a 2 hr 40 minute unload. I rolled into the yard at 5:45 pm, everyone else had left by 5 pm, before I got out to open the gate I switched to ODYM, then drop the 500 yds to drop my trailer, then 200 yds back to the fuel pump, by the time I hit the fuel pump my 14 was up, all the dials on the ELD were red and reading ZERO available on-duty or drive. It was still another 15 minutes before I went off-duty, for the next 14 days, my ELD showed a violation of the 14 hr rule. Had I thought about, any time between my switching to ODYM and running out of hours, I could have hit the BIG DAY button under the rules, and been perfectly legal, but, my brain was tired and I forgot. On day 8 of the following 14 days, I got pulled in for a Level 1 in Wyoming, the ELD gave up the violation, the inspector looked at it, asked what the details were, I explained it to him, he didn't note it on the report, but did play 20 questions with me about it.
We use On Duty Yard Move a lot with hauling containers, ports, rail yards, container depots, or customers, as others have said, once your 14 starts, it runs for 14 hours. The only way to go beyond 14 and not have a violation is to use the 16 hr BIG DAY that is available on some ELD's, however, there are multiple caveats to using the 16 hr rule, the biggest is that you are starting and ending your day in the exact same location.
Oh, and OD can be used after the 14, but it will still run you out of hours, and your clocks won't reset until you've taken a full 10 hrs. Not uncommon for us to hit the wrong button when going off duty at night and accidently going on-duty, only to come in the next morning and not have any hours. We then have to go in and change the final status of the previous day to off-duty for it to self correct. Although we've also seen it sometimes not self correct, and you end up with an unplanned day off. -
It's a peoplenet setting. We use Big Road, there is no speed limit, time limit or autoswitchover on Yard Move under normal situations. Now, prior to the ELD changes in 2019, you could have a yard move setting of upto 5 miles from when you started the status, then it would change over, we used to use it all the time to buy us a few extra miles/minutes on our clock.

Just because your log says you are in violation doesn’t mean you actually are. You can be on duty after your 14 hour clock is expired, on duty yard move is an on duty status.
I have peoplenet and have used ONYM after the 14 hour window with no issues, up to 20 mph which is what my company set as the limit. Peoplenet also doesn’t highlight violations of any type. That’s a Dick move setting, make the DOT actually find the violations.aaronpeterbilt3787 Thanks this. -
On our Peoplenet if you're using ODYM and shut the truck off, when you restart the truck it changes your duty status to "on duty primary driver"! If you exceed 5 MPH you go into drive! When we first changed over from AOBRD to ELD there was no geofence limit on ODYM. I ran 15 miles from a customer in ODYM before I realized my screwup! That was soon changed.
