I keep a 5 hour energy for emergencies, also keep something to snack on during the long stretches, and try and stop every few hours and walk around the truck. If I have an audio book I can fire up, or a station where they are discussing something, that will help wake me up. Or if I've been doing that for a while, kick it back over to some tunes. Just change up the stimulus. And air is your friend. When we are tired we breath shallow, and that makes it worse. Crack the windows, smell the great outdoors, fill your lungs with some fresh air. If you are in an area where you can pull over, do that, take a leak, kick the tires, stretch, clean the trash out of the cab, enjoy the scenery.

I'll share something that a old timer taught me.

If you are getting tired and you cannot stop for nothing at the moment, pick something that irritates you maybe even lose your temper over the tiniest of problem. The anger componet cranks your body and kills the sleepy.

But make sure you are able to get some rest where you are going, your little hacking exercise using temper buys you a few hours at most once that wears off, you really need to park that thing.

Winters offer a chance to make snow angels. And it's COLD. Wake you right up. For a while.

But seriously do not go overboard with the lost temper thing. It can not go well if you do.

You had to toughen up if you wanted to keep your job. Day, night, good weather or bad, when it's time to work, we go to work. Sleep when you're not driving.

Slow shipper? I'm sleep. Doesnt matter if I had been asleep for 10 hours, and got up and checked in with a shipper. If I am waiting, I am sleep. When they knock on the sleeper and ready for me, I am ready to rumble and run 11 hours straight every day of the week if the money is there.

"How do you get to that point?"

You build up to it. You dont expect to run the New York marathon just because you got a new pair of sneakers. You start running, build your endurance and stamina, compete in shorter marathons and then go all out. Start your goals small and build up. When I first started, 500 miles was lethal. But that was the days of the 14 and 10. 500 miles a day was half of what I could run in 14 hours. It took a little time, but that 500 miles became 1000 miles a day and home on weekends.

Exactly this. And now, with most folks on elogs, there's no reason to be sleepy when it's time to ride.

My father called this ability to go to sleep as having diesel in the blood. I could get in my sleeper get the temp comfortable and I could be asleep in 30 minutes.
