FLYMIKEXL Thanks this. -
I am in school with truckitman and Truscorpio. Your threads have been enlightening. In a prior post, you indicated that the per diem pay plan limited the ability to write off some expenses. I have a few questions about your understanding of tax deductions. Any qualifications and exclusions that you are not a tax professional or accountant (assuming that it the case) are duly noted in advance but I would like your reactions and or understanding as to the following if you don't mind.
1. Are the expenses incurred related to attending school (e.g. mileage driven, food we purchase, down payment) a tax write off? If yes, could I still claim those expenses if I accept the per diem pay plan?
2. Similarly, is the weekly withholding by Millis from our paycheck to pay back the balance of our school expenses a tax deduction?
Thanks again. -
I doubt very seriously that your mileage would be deductible. I saved my receipts for the $100 deposit and the $400 deposit. I would imagine that those would be deductions, but I'm not 100% sure. If they are, then the weekly amount that Millis is taking from our checks would be as well. I'll be making an appointment with my tax guy when I finally get home to ask him those questions. If they are in fact deductable, it won't matter which pay plan you choose. It is also possible that your time at the hotel away from home could fall under the IRS's guidelines for daily per diem allowances even though you aren't hired yet. That's another question I'll be asking when I get home.

Never mind, scratch that

Parked in Indy until Sunday morning, this will be my first 34 hour (and then some) reset. There's a BW-3's within walking distance. Time for some well earned alone time and a few beers. Enjoy your weekend, y'all
