Yup, I was definitely nervous. He told me off the record that he thought my driving was fine but he had to flag me on a technicality. At least I don't have to do the other parts again next time around.

I'll use a left turn as an example. If you are turning left onto a four lane road, you have to turn into the left-most lane. Even if you need to be in the right lane. Once your truck and trailer are fully through the turn and completely straight, then you signal and get into the right lane. Like I said, I caught it and he noticed that I caught it, just too late.

For those of you finishing class, and those who follow...There are things on this test that your school instructor probably wont tell you about when it comes to the backing test. Specifically regarding point deductions. We were told that we would be given a certain amount of pull-ups per maneuver, which is correct. However...you can take more than the amount they allot you. It'll just cost you a point. That is EXTREMELY important to know, because hitting a cone is 2 points. It's better to pull up and be safe. In real life, it's safety first. No limits on pull-ups. Take the extra pull-ups if you need them. Bill never mentioned that in class. Would have made things a lot less stressful if he did. I did 4 pull-ups on the 90 degree alley dock. Lost 2 points, but got it in perfectly. Doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning is winning.

Don't sweat it, you'll get through it. I didn't think that going to the outside lane on that left turn example was a disqualifier, thought that was just a point, kind of like taking a turn to short/wide.

There was a guy who after doing the whole road test yielded slow through a red light making a right turn just before the college. Should have stopped but kept going. You know he cussed himself out up a storm being that close to the finish and hitting an automatic failure. Did fine and passed on the next go around.

Man, I am sorry you had this happen today, but you'll be fine. Lesson learned, and move on.

Bill has preached that turn to us, and I hope I don't forget when I take my test. I appreciate you telling us about using the pull ups when we take our skills test. I wasn't aware, as you indicated, that we are not limited to the number of pull ups we can use. I was under the impression that you were allotted 2 pull ups per maneuver, and no more than 10 total pull ups? So if I'm understanding you correctly, we can use as many as we want per maneuver, just no more than 10 total??

Never hurts to ask the instructor how your graded. Our trainers weren't allowed to be our testers. We had to swap for instructors who were state qualified for testing.

With the program I went through we got 12 points total. You get 1 pull up 1 GOAL (get out and look) for the 100' straight line. 2 free pull up's and 2 GOAL for the offset and alley dock. Anything beyond the pull ups are points. If you GOAL more than the requirements its an auto fail. If you don't break the first set of cones with the ICC bumper on the trailer you have to return to the starting position. (this can get tricky because students then had to figure out how to re correct from messing up.) Tester could allow the person to pull around and re-setup however those only happened when it was beyond saving.

If you encroach a line at any point you'll get stopped and told to go forward and it'll be counted as 1-2 points (forgot). If you are in a final position encroaching a line and honk your horn that's 10 points. (it happened to someone on the offset. Rear passenger drive tire was on the line.) If your ICC bumper goes over the back of the small box at the end of the lane on your 90 degree alley dock its a major point deduction. Honk your horn with it over the back line its 10 points.

Also common sense, always have your seatbelt on through all portions of the test. Even if you just used a GOAL and hop back up in the cab to honk the horn. Had one disqualified for that.
