After reading through a majority of the posts here, I have to ask the simple question. Why do any of you actually drive trucks for a living? Seems to me that you could get local jobs doing just about anything that would be better than driving around for poor pay, etc. With the hours that are put in driving a truck, you could work two jobs at home and make more. I find it hard to believe that anyone would want to work in a field that from what I can see does nothing but screw you over.

I've given alot of thought to getting my CDL and driving, but I hop on here and read these posts and the thought goes away very fast. I figure there has to be a decent number of drivers out there that somewhat like their jobs. But not according to this forum anyway.

If the trucking "career" is as bad as the majority on here say it is, maybe its time to get a new one.

Not all co's are bad. Not all drivers should be drivers. Why work 2 gigs and seldom sleep when you can be out here and get better rest? This is not a job it is a lifestyle. Try telling a marine he is no longer a marine. Once you get used to this lifestyle you can go out and do any job, but you will long for the road sooner or later. There is no way to explain to someone who has never lived this life how to compare the two. Some like the adventures of not knowing where you are going. Who wants to be chained up in a dead end job they hate? Or be surrounded by 4 walls and under the same roof for 30 years? Not me. I like to be moving.

On here you see only a fraction of drivers from any one company. Example, SWIFT, you see just a fraction of Drivers, most of them are the ones whom complain, but yet some come on here and brag. But look at the numbers who do not come on here, and the number of trucks they run, over 16000 trucks.

JB Hunt same thing you see some who hates it but more of them like working for them. I worked for a lady who had her truck leased on to JB Hunt in a round about way, I was pulling a JB Hunt trailer. I talked to several JB Hunt Drivers who loved being there, and met only one who was upset with them. And he was upset cause he was wanting to be home for a reunion where he would have seen family members he not seen in many many years.

I just mentioned 2 of the most hated on this forum and other forums.

Do I enjoy driving? Yes I do. Since I was 20 I traveled. Either by Sea, or by truck I traveled in some form or another. In 2000 I was terminated cause I refused to drive Illegal. Not able to get another job at that time I took an early retirement. 7 years of walls closing in on me was 7 years to much. If it was not for the last job closing down, I would be on the road today. And I will be back out in the next few weeks.

    As notarps said
Is very true. If you enjoy it, you will be yearning to be out there. While I was on my retirment every time I saw a truck stopped me in my tracks to watch and set my desire to come back even more.

As I said I will be back out soon, been approved to go out with Swift, but before I call them back, I am going to search out other offers first, and hope they do not shut down.
And if you do 99% chance you will be carried off on a strecture. Once a Marine, Always a Marine....

As a Coast Guard Vet, I also wish to go back to Sea.
But no time to enjoy the money you make, nor your family. All work and no play makes for a very DULL Life.

I got tired of the same old job monday thru friday, waking up to an alarm every morning (wishing it was friday already) and then driving to work which I wasnt enjoying anymore (8 years). Then on Saturday evening I would start getting depressed because I only had one more day off before starting another week....

I actually get more sleep being a trucker (hard to believe) and Im in control of what I do and how I decide to do it. Im not stuck working with the same people everyday either, which can be a depressing situation if you dont like someone or one gets on your nerves everyday. Another thing is, when I come off of hometime, I dont feel like Im going back to work, trucking to me doesnt seem like work. I make more money also. As mentioned before, this job isnt for everybody, especially if you have young kids at home.

I would like to add, driving local is no picnic either. I found doing the local gig is some what harder to do then OTR. Driving local, you can run intrastate miles and usually work 12 hr days driving. You could have mutiple p/u and drops. Dealing with city traffic and get caught in a backup daily is pure hell on the knees. Your chances of getting into a accident is greater. Yeah, the flipside your home every night and sleep in your bed. I would rather do the OTR gig, it was less of a headache.

It all comes down to what you believe in:

Some people believe that Al Gore should have been President, is a Nobel Prize wiener and Invented the Internet(s).

Some believe that a trillion dollars is not that much.
Some believe that Pepsi is better than Coke.

I believe I can drive a truck and am willing to drive to Carney's Pt, NJ just to buy a sandwich (across from the FJ, supreme with yellow peppers -forget the name but they are from PA, wrapped).

After 4 months OTR with what I still consider to be a good company, I've decided trucking isn't a job. Nor is it a lifestyle.

Trucking OTR is like crack. Either your first experience essentially kills you, or you are hooked for life. I think I've fallen into the hooked crowd. Just having waaay too much fun.

To be honest I was hoping to see some posts like the ones above. I sat scratching my head every time I logged into this forum and out of 100 posts, 95 contain negative comments. I appreciate the honest answers that you all posted.

Best of luck to all of you out on the road. Who knows, I still may just make the move in the very near future.
