Not sure lol, lotta rules. What about flats? How much would a driver need to gross to be able to reasonably net 100k?

Fixed it for you. $100k is just a number I threw out to even the playing field. You will not make big money if you are looking for an easy path. The company drivers that make 6 figures get paid for what they know. And they all have rules. Want less rules and an easier path? Sure...cut the money in half.

Anything food, fuel or building materials will always be "recession-proof". But no company is completely recession proof, so if you are on the lowest rung on the ladder, you'll be first on the list when lay-offs start. The saying goes: "Last in, first out".

This thread is funny to me. Not because there is anything wrong with the question. It's funny to me because of a conversation I had this afternoon with a guy I know about something he did last week. This guy generally pays his drivers well. They don't drive junk either. He told me that an OEM dealer he buys trucks from has notified him that both his new orders for 2018 are in. This guy will not generally employ a driver until they have at least 18 months on the road AND their driving records have to be clean. He has 2 drivers that are getting new tractors as soon as they get in and the tractors are all made ready for the road. However he took one driver out of a 2017 truck early because he wanted to give that truck to one of his greener drivers. Well that was until he got a call last week from another carrier verifying employment. Turns out this driver got angry about something and put in a bunch of apps. Guess who did not get a 2017 tractor? Guess who has a microscope on them now? I guess what I am trying to say and not doing a good job of it is sometimes the grass your in is the greenest your going to find for a long time. I'm 60 years old. I have heard about all these great jobs where drivers make the BIG BUCKS all my life. I never found them.

A decent company would try to hold on to a good driver.

Just get out there and drive, driver. In time you'll know what your next move will be after some experience is had.

And I agree. This is far from over. When this guy gets in they are going to discuss the situation and see how best to fix it. However I have known this guy for almost 20 years now. He will not give a nearly new 2017 tractor to a driver until he finds out their intentions. He did return a good report to this new carrier. The driver does not currently know about the truck.
