Granted, the company I work for I guess would not be a small company like it once was. Didn't mean to lash out - safe miles to ya.

Dumps and dirt haulers have been getting a bad rap for years. I know where it comes from because we have had the same problem. It's the local driving and the people that see the trucks going down the surface streets that think they're speeding. The size of the trucks makes it look like the driver is speeding along with all the noise a truck can make especially when empty.

We'd get calls that our truck was speeding down a street and the caller would say he was just flying and running red lights. Then we'd go out and check the clock chart (yes, it was some time ago) and see the driver was driving 5mph under the speed limit and nothing showed up as any erratic driving.

The word gets around that the drivers get paid by the load and it only takes one driver to drive crazy and the whole industry is doomed. I know that out in Las Vegas hauling twin 40' belly dumps required the same checking that we went through except no hazmat. 10 years ago the business was on the down side of 30 years of building so those trucks were around everywhere. I have heard that a couple of gas haulers that got canned tried to work for the dirt haulers and they would not hire either of them. So I agree you guys get a bad rap and don't deserve it.

True, a big part of it is that we do travel down residential streets when needed, making all kinds of noise....standard noise, not like blowing the horn and stuff. Also, hauling dirt or aggregate products, trucks get dirty. Our job sites are new construction, which means no pavement, all dirt. Gravel pits, you guessed it, not paved either. I think having a dirty truck can give the wrong impression as well. I always tried to have clean equipment but going back and forth to Nevada every day over I-80 makes for a pretty dirty ride in 3 days!
