I met a guy who says he owns two trucking companies with different MCs.

    Is this possible?

Sure...as long as each truck is operated under separate authority and designated as such on the doors.

The authorities cannot be commingled even in the book keeping dept.

    1) why have two?
    2) I thought fmcsa allows only one mc per person. Guess I was wrong? Unless he's lying

No its Legal.... You can have 2 or more as long as its running under a separate Authority and Different business Name and EIN... Some guys put them in LLC's... Some also do DBA's
