I have the Volvo system and I like it when I encounter a truck going 1/2 mph slower. Rather than take all day passing i let the radar maintain the distance.

Shouldn't be using cruise under those conditions anyway.

Perhaps I'm underinformed. Is OnGuard only active when you are using cruise control?

If it works like the Volvo VEC system then yes. Otherwise it just beeps and in the case of my truck flashes a "distance alert" on the driver information display. The self braking only is active when cruise is on. Now my VEC system won't activate the brakes if your foot is on the accelerator pedal to override the system. Apparently OnGuard will still brake regardless.

Now on the VEC the cruise literally has to be off. If you simply cancel with the clutch or brake, the system is still locked and loaded. It self cancels after a period of time but can still self brake even if you brake to cancel the cruise setting without turning off the switch.

Thanks for the clarification. If so then the best course of action if you have cruise control active would be to cancel cruise with a button in the event of a notification so you maintain control of the braking system.

Your comment that your system enables you to keep cruise control on when approaching another governed truck is about the only thing that would be useful IMHO. Other than that limited application it would seem to be introducing an element of risk to override the driver's control of the braking system.

That's pretty much it's only benefit really. It's pretty much designed to discourage cruise control in situations where it might otherwise be too dangerous, like in heavy traffic. The proximity radar gets annoying because in heavy traffi. Its going to be alerting constantly.

I have had mine lock up with cruise off when it caught a reflection in the rain on a curvy dark 2 lane highway 63 between Arkansas and Missouri.

I haven't gotten through all the replies yet, but this is exactly what I been thinking, and finally someone else with the common sense to have this concern as well.

Over the years, its just become a learned reflex in the winter that if foot touch breaks (and always try to use them lightly in bad weather), then immediately look in mirrors for trailer swing. If trailer swings, let go of breaks to get the wheels rolling to regain control.

Now what happens with this automatic breaking system? Is the driver going to be charged for the jack knife?

Even if I loved my company and they treated me right, I would refuse to drive one of those trucks that had that installed, and just move on to another company. Its my reputation, and my life, on the line.

My husband's on his International would break at lines, bridges, guardrails, cars or trucks passing, for no reason. It did not matter if the cruise was on or off, it would do it either way. It was bad if you were going up a hill and lost your momentum. Technicians didn't even really know how to work on them in January of 2012 either.

I think the system is very unsafe and dangerous to not only the truckers, but to the public as well.

More than that, it's the life of everyone in your proximity.
