Sadly, the companies that will contact you are not the ones you want to work for. Without going into detail (have done that before), you need to ask yourself why they are hiring?

In this economy, those drivers with good employers do not leave. Those employers that constantly need to advertise should send up huge red flags for drivers. At least, thats the way I see it.

Unfortunately in my time in trucking I have found that a majority of drivers are more of a problem than the companies they work for. They expect the world handed to them on a silver platter. They don't really understand what is involved with truck driving. Then when one thing goes wrong they blame everyone under the sun instead of taking things with a grain of salt. So the reason I believe a lot of these companies are hiring is because of most drivers attitude that things are always better somewhere else.

Yes, good drivers with good employers don't leave. But then again, good drivers understand the world does not revolve around them. Sometimes things don't work out like they are supposed to. Good drivers understand issues arise and they know how to work with people to get them resolved.

I'm not saying that there are not some companies that have not earned the reputation they have. But recruiting tools such as advertising sites are necessary in this day and age of job hoping. If your ideals were the way, then why are companies in every industry from health care to engineering and yes, even truck driving posting jobs on sites such as these and Monster???

Sorry I disagree with you there. Good companies have no reason to advertise since their turnover is very low. Drivers come to them so they don't need to. We had a 5 year waiting list and drivers would stop in all the time and fill out applications. All the people all going the same way so what chances do some of these guys have? Besides, I'd be much better off to find a good same company that knows my name and my skills so when I do need repairs they trust me from the start.

I understand the logic about a company needing drivers because of high turnover. One thing missing from the equation is experience.

I am a recent graduate (Haz Mat & Tanker) with no background in trucking, or anything remotely related (like being a mechanic, or a Harley rider:biggrin_25519:) - except for driving a 22' straight bobtail. I'm looking to get a start asap.

Having read these forums for a while now, I know which big companies to avoid, or at least which ones to put at the bottom of the list. I'd like to stay local, so that is where I am looking first, but I will just pay my dues and go out for a year to get the experience. I don't want to do cement, or waste management unless it is roll-off. I'd be most at home doing LTL with a powered pallet jack and a lift-gate... but I'll just keep dreaming about that one.
