I just got my CDL I'm contemplating if I should go OTR or stay local. I want to get school out of the way. Is it possible to take online classes being an OTR driver?:biggrin_2554:

How likely is it that I won't be able to find an area where I can get wireless reception? I'm going to be using whatever wifi I can use and my cellphone as a modem.

your cellphone company should have "air cards" that are wireless broadband connections.
They might cost a pretty penny, but it's the best thing available.

As a newbie, I would not recommend it. I did it for awhile and may go back and pick it up again if the economy rebounds. I only have about 40 hrs remaining. Not that it will do me any good having a B.A. degree, but I'm the only one in my family without a degree.

But, it can cause problems on the road as far as getting enough rest, etc. Being more worried about your school assignments as opposed to the job at hand. That's why I would not recommend it for a newbie. Working for the mega-carriers you start out with will make it more difficult also. I work for a small company where I was able to plan out my time well. I didn't have to worry about somebody dispatching me in the middle of the night or on the weekends.

A mobile air card would be a necessity. Can't rely on being able to get to a wi-fi hotspot when an assignment is due and you're stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Get an air card and stay away from the WiFi spots as they are far from being secure! I wouldn't doubt if most of them are now clones of the original transmitter!

Just look at all the providers and see which ones have the best coverage. And be extremely careful of using your cell as you modem. Most of the companies have a hefty charge for data by using it as a modem. It can turn out to be cheaper to get unlimited broadband but when you talk to them about it you must be firm about it being UNLIMITED! These little plans they put you on with a ton of email and texting but just a few videos will jack up your bill because there just isn't enough time for videos and downloads! Remember online education uses a lot of video!

I had a broadband with Sprint and went into the hospital and was off the road for a few months and had them suspend my card and when I called them to start it up the girl put me on that new "limited" plan. I use my computer for everything from email to watching movies and TV. The first months bill was $760. I went ballistic but my wife went murderous! I got it straightened out and went to Sprints site and looked up how much the plans gave you and it's actually nothing!

Another problem is you need to get the carrier for the area you mainly drive in! Sprint worked great everywhere but the North West! The NW was a dead zone unless it was around a town or big city! Look at the maps but OPEN them up further so you get a better look as when you open them up some of that "red" goes away!

Anyway stay off of WIFI as free isn't always a good thing! At least with a card you can get online at a loading dock! You'd be surprised at how many drivers think they can "hack" your computer with windows explorer! That should tell you that for everyone of them there is a real hacker waiting for you to use password on an unsecured network!
